Do women really have one less rib than men?

This question has been asked before and the majority says no. I will give best answer to the first person to provide a valid Internet source supporting his/her answer.

One answer cited a source which talked about the pelvic bone. I would like to see a source specific to the ribs. Better yet if anyone can cite a source with proof and a history of the myth would definately get best answer.

You are correct. Women have one bone less than a men. This extra bone is present to support their reproductive system, as they are the one , who bears the child. It has come down from evolution. Even Female Chimp has one extra bone.

A typical human ribcage consists of 24 ribs, 12 on each side of the thoracic cavity, the sternum and 12 thoracic vertebrae in both males and females. This was noted by the Flemish anatomist Vesalius in 1543, setting off a wave of controversy, as it was traditionally assumed from the Biblical story of Adam and Eve that men's ribs would number one fewer than women's. (De humani corporis fabrica [1]) A small proportion of people have one pair more or fewer but this is unrelated to gender. Ribs are attached behind the vertebral column.

No. My sources says that both men and women have 12 pairs of ribs, and that this is all a myth.

no. the myth is actually that men have one less rib than women due to 'God having used one of Adam's ribs to make woman out of' - it is nonsense
