I know that a lot of Women in Korea study Tae Kwon Do, but I was wondering if Women study Hapkido or Tang Soo Do in Korea. These two Korean martial arts are very devastating.....excellent for self defense.

  1. In Korea, women participate in martial arts right along men.  My father studied Hapkido in Korea in the late 60s.  During that time, there weren't many women seen practicing martial arts.  Today however, women are punching and kicking all over the place.  Some are pretty hard core.

I would say for women, Hapkido is better for self defense.  Tang Soo Do primarily consists of punching and kicking.  While it's great for exercise and fun if you like sparring, but as self defense in emergency situations where anything can happen, Hapkido is more an all-around martial art that adds grappling and throwing techniques.

Not everyone are physically able to immobilize someone with greater strength and size by punching and kicking.  For these people, best way to immobilize an attacker is to use their own momentum and attack against them.  Hapkido will be better in this case. You can learn to bring down a 200lb man to his knees using only one hand if he tries to attack you.

On a side note... I thought the Asker might find it interesting that there is an all women Special Forces in S. Korea.  These women are badazz.  They train harder than most men and aren't given any slack for being females.  If I'm not mistaken, they're trained in Hapkido, whereas, general male soldiers in the regular army are trained predominantly in TaeKwonDo.  They're crazy when you see them training breaking bricks with their heads, but after training and they have regular clothes and make up on, they look like just another sweet Korean girl.

Be careful who you mess with...  Looks can be deceiving =)
