  1. jay is right.  the only thing i would add is that they get a pension per term served, so if they serve 2 terms they get double the pension.

this is how clinton was able to set up his extravagant office in harlem for a sum of about 354,000.  This was the most expensive post-presidential office ever in the history the US.  Congress generally budgets about 125,000 a year for this.  His first choice for the office would have cost 811,000 but the public outrage forced him into the lesser cost office.

  2. No. They get secret service protection if they want it for life.

  3. Yes, I believe so.

  4. The retirement benefits received by former Presidents include a pension, Secret Service protection, and reimbursements for staff, travel, mail, and office expenses. The Presidential pension is not a fixed amount, rather it matches the current salary of Cabinet members (or Executive Level I personnel), which is $191,300/year as of March, 2008.

For most of America’s history, retired presidents did not receive a pension. In 1958 Congress passed the Former Presidents Act, which gave retired presidents a pension of $25,000 per year, an office, and a staff. Congress has increased the pension several times. Former presidents now receive a pension that is based on the annual salary of a cabinet secretary, which was $161,200 in 2001. Former presidents have historically been given a generous allowance for office and staff. Beginning with Democrat Bill Clinton, presidents (or their surviving widows or widowers) will receive funds for an office and staff for four and one-half years after they leave office.

  5. Originally they get pension,  money to run an office and Secret Service protection. Since their pay as president is so small, with cost of living increases they might get paid more in retirement.
