Question:

Do you HAVE to have a blood test when you go to the doctor for an irregular period?

All right, well, I had gotten my period twice over a year ago and thats the last time I've had it. And my mom thinks I should go to the doctor for an irregular period. Because I am turning 17 in a couple months and I really should have my period by now.

But the thing is. I am scared to death of needles. I have a phobia of them. If I even see one, I get a huge panic attack and shake and get all light-headed like I will pass out and start crying hysterically. And my mom said that they will most likely do a blood test there. Is there any way I can have the doctor do something else without having a blood test done?

Also, what would the doctor exam be like if you went for that?

  1. The doctor will do a pelvic exam to see if there is any visual reason why your period has not been regular.

Yes, a blood test will be part of it since your hormone levels must be checked.  Sorry.  Talk to your doctor beforehand and let them know you're phobic of needles.  They have dealt with needle phobias before and I'm sure they can get you through it.  At least it's over quickly.

  2. Hi hun, im a nurse. Right, you dont always have to have a blood test done, but if you did the needle is so small (believe me, i have done many and had many) that you cannot even feel it. The area is wiped with anaesthetic alcohol wipe anyway. They can also do a ultrasound scan, to see if you have any ovarian cysts. These are completely harmless, fluid filled sacs. They push on your ovaries and cause hormone imbalances, which brings us full circle, because this blood test is to check hormone levels. But you can ask for an ultrasound scan at the hospital. Your doctor arranges an appointment for you, and a female nurse usually, will place the scan on your tummy and roll it around with some jelly on it and a picture of you inside will come up on her screen and she can see if theres anything there. Then the results will be sent back to your doctor. Thats it hun. You can leave the blood test till last if you want, but its totally painless :) Email me if you need anything else xx

  3. You should have an internal to check for any anomalies and blood work to check your hormone levels. You will have to bite the bullet, it is part of life.

  4. Unfortunately we live in a society where the dr will more than likely have the nurse ask you a few questions and then do a pelvic on you and then prescribe some bc pills for you to regulate you just like 90% of the girls out there.... INSTEAD  of doing the free t3 free t4 test and the female hormone panel on you. If the later tests were done you would more than likely get the help you needed but instead they will give you the bc pills and then 5 years from now tell you that you have PCOS or some other crappy disease.

  5. Well u should go and get this checked the doctor will examine u u may not have to have a blood test but if u dont dont worry explain how scared u are. peoplle get blood tests every day and it really dosnt hurt just look away  but explain it to ur doc who will help u through it

  6. the doctor will probably give you something to regulate your period. Usually birth control.

  7. well first its completely normal for you to have a couple periods then not have any for a long time cuz it just means your body decided not to have periods yet. my sister was in her senior year of high school before she go her period regularly. she had gotten it a couple times in 11th grade then didn't get it again for over a year.

where as i got mine when i was 13 and have had it regualarly since the first time.

i mean i'm not a doctor so there could be a problem but i do know its normal for that type of thing to occur.

i don't think the doctor with even give you a blood test in the first place. my thought is the doctor will say that your period just hasn't come regularly yet and wait a while to see if it comes cuz its totally normal for it not to come up to a certain age. i believe that when you are 18 if you haven't gotten it yet they may do some tests to find out why. but i really doubt they will do any now.

and a pelvic exam isn't too bad.

it literally only takes like 3 minutes and you're done.

the doctor leaves the room while you get undressed fully and put on a paper gown then sit on the exam table and cover the bottom half of yourself with a paper sheet.

then the doctor comes back in and feels your b*****s for lumps.

then with a tool called a speculum the doctor will insert it into your v****a which may be uncomfortable if you are a vigin but i am and so she just used a smaller one and it didn't hurt at all.

the speculum is to sort of spread you out a little so the doctor can look inside and then take a long q tip and rub it inside to get a sample of cells which then they will check under a microscope to be sure that nothing is wrong down there.

then your doctor will insert a couple fingers inside you and feel around to make sure all seems normal and she will push on your lower stomach as her finger is inside so she can feel for your ovaries, uterus, all of the female reproductive organs to be sure that everything is healthy.

its really not bad at all.

    don't worry. you'll do fine.

and ask the doctor about whether you need a blod test so you can prepare yourself for it. and hopefully won't be quite as nervous. but like i said i don't think they will even give you a blood test

i've been going for a year and i haven't needed any blood tests for anything.

  8. at the gyno, i think you only get bloodtaken if you get tested for hiv and other stds i would not worry bout it but i could be wrong

  9. Talk to your doctor.

You may need blood test to check hormone levels depending on many other medical history answers.

Many people are afraid of needles. The best way to get past that is TELL the doc and nurse, and make sure youtell the lab or whoever is drawing it, ask for the BEST tech.

    If you need blood test:

They may numb your arm with a gel, or put ice pack on it.

Just look away.  Think thoughts of other places where you WANT to be, close your eyes, and relax.  RELAX is the main thing.

I hate being stuck and don't care much for doing it either although I usually get the sample easily (nurse for over 30 yrs)...

What I do is to look away, and offer them my Left arm and tell them where the good vein is.  I look away mainly to avoid flinching!

It only lasts for a few seconds.

Think how proud you will be after getting thru something you fear!
