Specifcally, reports indicate he took an overdose of Tylenol 3 (acetominophen & coedine), so it probably is both.  I imagine the coedine probably caused the immediate death, causing repsiratory depression, therefore respiratory failure.  Tylenol OD causes liver failure, is not a fun way to go, and not always effective.  Unfortunately, I can't find a link to a news story specifying this.

Um, he was killed because we could not afford to have him talking. I mean he committed suicide and died of respiratory failure.

Allegedly suicide although I'd question "reality" on this one and keep looking deeper for more answers.
