  1. For about $30.00 you can buy a in ground sprinkler that has an elbow that comes back up out of the ground and hooks to a garden hose.It gives you good  area coverage.

  2. If you have a small lot then you don't need a sprinkler system.  Dragging hoses around something small would do the trick.  We live on almost an acre and had to put in a sprinkling system to get the lawn to take.  We would have basically been watering from sun up until sun down to get the lawn we have with a sprinkler system.

  3. No, you don't need a sprinkler system, it is more efficient, waters more evenly and with price of water, that may be important.

Since you are renting, I wouldn't bother either.

There are many solutions, just use your imagination.  For example the side impact type sprinklers come individual on a spike.  You can place them around the yard and then using pieces of hose, new fittings and some water couplers that allow you to direct water from one hose to another, you can water without dragging hoses all around.  You can also buy battery powered timers to attach to the faucet to turn on the water or turn it off.

New lawns need to be nearly constantly wet to get the roots to move into the soil below.  So figure how you will water during the day if you are away from home.  It can be done.  We used to do it before sprinkler systems became the norm.  We just dragged the hose around the lawn all day, LOL!

  4. I have never had one, I hear they are more trouble then they are worth.
