There is not a simple and obvious answer to your question. Archaeology – as the investigation of past human behavior and not simply the collection of antiquities – is a social/behavioral science (in the American educational system it is a subfield of Anthropology). The social (sometimes called ‘soft’) sciences of today are in something of the same position that the biological/life sciences were in during the early 19th century. Those early naturalists knew a lot – (for instance, they knew evolution was a fact because they could observe it in the fossil record) – but they could not explain how it all worked and fit together.

Darwin’s Theory of Evolution did for biological science what Newton’s Theory of Gravity had done for physical science. The social sciences strive to understand human behavior scientifically, but they have yet to develop a good explanatory model (scientific theory) that makes sense of much of their data and observations, as Darwin’s theory did for biology.

I think (guess) that the spark igniting the next phase of the scientific revolution will come when advancements in the study of brain biochemistry (of which we know next to nothing) establish a physical explanation for many of the questions we have about human psychology and behavior. Something like that would almost instantly propel the social sciences from their current ambiguous place fully into the realm of real science.

yes, it's considered a science.  it's one of the four sub-categories of anthropology.  anthropology is tricky, it has two sub-fields that are more social science, and it has two sub-fields that are actual sciences....cultural and linguistics are the social sciences of anthropology.  archaeology and biological are the two sciences of anthropology.
