  1. no; i think it is now a matter of utmost urgency that solar, etc., sources of energy are made available as widely as possible. Leaving it to private enterprise will put cost penalties on the public because of patent rights, monopolies, etc. Govt., should buy whatever inventions are proven to be practicable andmake them available widely at costs that are certainly cheaper than the present prices of fossil fuels (adjusted to equivalence).

Nulcear energy is much more tricky. It could be devilish if not strictly controlled for social good. Here again, i think that costs should be the major concern. Govt., should not allow profit motives to keep costs above cost of production.

Generally, I feel that energy, like water and air, should be available to all without cost penalties and profit takings. This implies either keeping private enterprise away, or at least, under very strict control.

  2. You either believe in the power of the free market or you don't. If nuclear and fossil fuels get subsidized while other options do not, than the market is in no way free and open and the alternative technologies will never be able to compete.

We either need to realize that we don't have a free market and give all options the same funding ( or more for renewables)

or take away all subsidies and make all options equally competitive.

  3. Actually, I think government subsidies should be shifted to alternative energy. While it is possible we might see some relief in the price of gas, I don't think it's ever going to go down very much. We really need to make the commitment to shift to more renewable energy sources - rather than just being a politically correct thing to say and do. In fact, I think the government should strongly encourage the oil companies to pour large amounts of their resources into the development of these alternative energy sources.

But I will exclude nuclear from that. I do think we need to be investing in more nuclear because I think it offers the most bang for the buck and modern technologies are much safer than in the past.

Regardless of what renewable energies we decide to pursue, we really need to make some decisions and start working on putting them into practical use today.
