Do you agree with Mick Malthouse's comments when he says the game is becoming like basketball?

Mick said, "I hate saying it, but one of the things we are seeing, with the game is it is starting to turn into a basketball shootout from time to time."

I disagree with him - I reckon AFL football is becoming more like womens netball!

  1. Hate to admit this but I half agree with Mick and my team (the Swans) certainly were hand-pass happy against Brisbane but it sure worked for them on Sat. night.  If teams can be spot-on with the handpasses running down the ground and not lose possession then I can see why it happens as possession means everything and then the only kicking you need is the one that kicks the goal etc. but overall all that running down the ground doing handpasses could wear them out maybe more than just booting in long.  If it starts to get too obvious then rules might have to be revised to limit handpasses or something????  I think Paul

Roos is a basketball fan so you never know (plus he coaches like a basketball coach at ground level???).

  2. yes and i reckon he is one of the reasons, he whines about any thing, win or lose.

wants all these interchanges, more on the bench as does Wallace, i think he'd be happy he was up to his old tricks earlier through the week about the umpiring in brizzy.  it seemed to have the desired effect on Sunday.  especially in the forward line.

collingwood would still of won the game but its a bit disheartening for supporters to see this happen. he is like  a fox, ol Micky boy.

  3. I think he's referring to the defence tactics

There's 2 types of defence in basketball

    a) Zone Defence

    b) Man on Man

These terms are now used in footy.

How do you beat a Zone defence in basketball? You throw the ball around the perimeter until the a player cut free through the defence grab the pass and score a basket.

In footy you kick the balls beyond the 50 meter line until you spot a free man to kick to.

Man on man is similar tactics in basketball as it is in footy

  4. In a way, yes, I do agree.

When one side gets the ball they progress towards their goals by means of numerous handpasses & backward chip kicks. After a while they try to get into a good scoring position & have a shot on goals with a number of players shepherding & protecting the shooter.

When it's the other team in possession of the ball, exactly the same thing happens in reverse.

Sometimes I love to see a wet flooded ground - to negate that silly basketball style. Gone are the days of sliding about in the mud & cricket pitches - due to better ground drainage & removal of pitches.

  5. Well, Mick's the one pushing it toward basketball style with 100+ interchanges a game, time to restrict the amount to say 80 per game, players these days don't have accountability with a direct opponent, some could have several opponents throughout a game.

  6. Nah i think its becoming more like handball. Its football not handball, get it right!!!!!!!!!!

  7. yeach ur rite it is becoming like women's netball. The games I saw, most of the time they were chipping to uncontested people.

  8. The game used to be a lot more physical than now days, but until someone does a lay up and scores six points it wont be anything like basketball.

Soccer is more like it, I mean players from all sides are already taking dives or acting it up to get the free kick

  9. i dont mind that the speed is picking up

or that players are handballing more

i just want too see the game get its toughness back

    more agression

    less free kicks would help

and the tribunal should be more lenient

i mean go on to youtube and watch biffs bumps and brawlers 2

    thats wat footballs all about

  10. i dont listen to mick any more

  11. Its becoming more like Soccer in my opinion...AFL players are becoming very good actors - hence the new term 'Sprawling' !
