The world of professional wrestling is "still in shock" over the Chris Benoit murders, according to one of the sport's biggest names.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star Dave "The Animal" Batista says the wrestling industry is still traumatised by Benoit's double-murder suicide almost 14 months ago.

"Still to this day, I think people are in shock over it and a lot of people are still in denial," the US-based Batista told ninemsn.

"It's just the hardest thing we've ever done … a nightmare come to life."

Batista, 39, spent over five years wrestling with Benoit as two of the WWE's most popular entertainers.

He says the pair were close friends and "had a deep personal trust for each other and … talked about personal issues".

Benoit shocked the world last June when he murdered his wife Nancy and seven-year-old son Daniel in his Georgia home.

The 40-year-old Canadian is believed to have strangled his wife with a cord and used a choke hold to strangle his son before placing Bibles next to their bodies.

He then hanged himself with a weights machine in his basement.

"It's just hard to think of Chris Benoit in that way," Batista said.

"We all loved him so much, and we all respected him so much.

"A lot of us are kind of in denial because we don’t associate the Chris Benoit we knew and loved with the Chris Benoit who did that horrible thing."

Batista was speaking ahead of the WWE SummerSlam event, which is airs on Foxtel on Monday.

  1. Yeah he is right.....Benoit was just there entertaining everyone with the people who loved him and he loved.

And out of no where he murdered his family and himself

Yes it was/is a big shock for WWE but things must go on

We know how great benoit was but we need to move on Batista needs to know this and WWe i know that because he killed his family also he was double jeopardized

only because he killed his family people didnt really think it was that sad and it wasnt really paid alot of attention to.

  2. They no that most wwe deaths are due to heart fairlure , suidcide ,and body builders. It's a known fact that people won't accept no matter how bigger the wrestler gets in a week.

  3. whats wrong with it? its a colleage and friend that died......well killed himself and his family that doesnt mean people can't still be sad

  4. I agree. It's hard to look at Chris Benoit and think of what happened. If you see tapes of him wrestling, you'd never be able to tell what had happened..

I think Chris just took one too many hits on the canvas. They said at the autopsy he had the brain of an eighty year old Alzheimer's patient. I don't think he was in his right mind when it happened. I still love Chris and respect him for everything he's given to wrestling. I won't look at him as a murderer. I can't. I honestly think he had a mental breakdown.

    I agree with Batista.

  5. Me personally, I never have denial about anything it is leaning towards him murdering his family and killing himself but I REALLY TRULY DON'T BELIEVE HE DID IT!!!!

Dave has every right to say what he wants to, he knew Benoit personally not like we did, just enjoying his wrestling skills on tv.

And Mr. Bautista is a grown man with his own opinions, I don't think what he has to say should change anything its just his opinion.
