have heard that it is better to raise the deck and cut it regularly , but I also have thought that if you just let it grow out a bit, that the grass will be more vigorous, since you are not placing stress on it by cutting it every week when it is hot and dry.

why and how so?

Thanks for your answers!

  1. Bit of a clash here,i LLOOOVVEEE

the aroma of fresh cut grass,

but i LLOOOOVVEE to see grass that

has been left to grow, the grass itself

gets its own character,& the other seeds

that take root, add a fantastic diversity

    to 'grass'.

Let it grow & you will get not only insects

but larger wild life will 'favour' you

    with their presence !

    (sorry for my rant !)

  2. If your blade is sharp, don't worry about cutting often, even every five days is fine.  Do raise the deck during hot weather, on most mowers I find the good level to be about 2/3 as tall as the settings will go.

On the blade sharpening bit, if you don't have a bench grinder, go spend $35 on a cheapie.  If just used for this blade, even a cheap one will last you forever.  Sharpen every 15-20 hours of mower use.  Final blade dressing with a file also a good idea.  Always file towards the cutting edge, so you don't burr over the cutting edge.

  3. Ive never cut mine every week or so, i usually do it monthly in the summer (when we get one) when its looking a bit unkempt!!!

  4. During hot, dry weather when the lawn can be stressed,  it is best to set your blade at about 3.5 inches----which I do all the time anyway.  In addition, when you mow, do it just before dusk so that it can recover in the cooler temperatures of the sunset hour.

Cutting the grass blade by more than 1/3 of it's total length can contribute to more stress, which is the reason for not letting it grow too long before you mow.  Keeping your deck at 3.5 inches all the time will help to drought-proof your lawn and help to shade the turf to keep surface roots cooler and to reduce weed seed germination.

Hope that helps.  Happy mowing (argh!)

  5. Well, i cut it weekly if its dry keep them short, If u cut long grass, it will coth up in your mower

  6. You do not mention where you are from, but here in Phoenix, Az. it is better to cut it more often in the heat, and leave the deck a bit higher, you do not want to be taking off more than about 2 inches at a time, to keep it from browning.

  7. Dry summer? you having a laugh. It's the wettest August since records began. I was able to cit my grass yesterday for the first time since July.

Usually I would cut the grass every fortnight so as to allow some growth but no let it go too far. Over cutting can decrease root stimulation as the grass fails to absorb nutrients and sunlight.
