Do you agree with work release from prisons?

Am going to prison - expecting 3 years and told I'll probably be medium security to start. Do many medium security prisoners get work release? Would much prefer that to sitting in a cell all day.

  1. Not much chance of it.... they don't usually give work release to state prisoners especially those in a medium security facility.

  2. Sorry to hear about your situation.  Prisons do not do work release, they do have work programs outside the gate often, usually they are clean-up type jobs.  Why would you go to a medium sec lock-up with a three year bit?  Doesn't sound quite right.  Medium levels are usually reserved for 6+ year minimums, or more violent or dangerous offenders.

Of course, it would depend on your state.

You will not be sitting in a cell all day.  There are jobs and programs to get involved in.  There are call-outs you can sign up for: religious services, rec, library, hobby craft, groups and organizations, etc.  you are probably going to be a month or more at quarantine or intake for classification.  This will seem like a higher level, usually 12-23 hour lock down.  You may or may not have yard time during this, but you will definately have yard priviledges when you land at the permanent facility.

I might be able to give you more specific info, can certainly give you some good advice, email me if you want.

  3. You will not get work release. They might put you in a camp where you clean highways or fight forest fires. That is what they do in California.
