Do you always defend your favorite team/player?

Like, if someone is "insulting" your favorite team or favorite player, do you say something or do you just ignore it?

I hear so many negative comments about the Red Sox, I've learned to just ignore them. But when people start in on Jason Varitek I get in my defensive mode. lol.

How about you?

  1. As a Giants fan and I'm still defending Barry Bonds. I am a die hard fine, and when people say that I'm oblivious all I say is....give me evidence. I also try to the best of my abilities defend Zito, but I think he is a lost cause. At least I have San Lincecain to lean back on.(Sanchez, Lincecum, Cain) what a great new nickname.

-Andy, I wish the Giants would do like the A's. Beane does such a solid job.

  2. lol. Me too. If someone says something, especially about my favorite players, I usually get very defensive. Especially when someone says my favorite player is a loser even though they haven't even heard of him. Sometimes I ignore it, it depends, but I usually get VERY defensive even if it's about my favorite team or player. It usually makes me seem mean because im getting so defensive. lol. Great Question, here's a star!

  3. Nah. It is just smack talk. Smack talk means nothing since the field is where the games are played!

  4. I'll defend the Brewers if the statement that someone makes is completely ignorant.  But, mostly I just ignore it.  Great question

  5. of course i defend

all my friends are giants fan, and all they do is rag about how the a's rarely sell out their games. but seriously, is that the worst thing they could come up with to hate on the a's?!?!? all i have to do is mention that the giants have never won a title since moving to the bay area, and that usually shuts them up. i used to like the giants, but their fans, well most of them anyways, are so stupid and know nothing about baseball that i just learned to hate the.

  6. I get defensive when they start giving it to Derek Jeter. When they start with the overrated c**p. You have to watch Derek everyday like I do to realize that he isn't overrated. It's the little things he does in addition to the obvious that makes him great.

When people start saying things like "overpaid" I ignore it. Really, isn't anyone who gets paid millions for playing a game overpaid?

  7. Only if the person doing the criticizing actually wants to have an informed debate. Sure, a few funny digs are OK, but if you simply keep going, "A-Rod sucks and isn't clutch" or "Derek Jeter is overrated and g*y" or, my personal favorite "all the Yankees do is buy championships," I'm turning you off like the TV at midnight.

I get defensive about guys like Jeter, Posada, Paul O'Neill, (when he was playing) Bernie Williams (ditto) and Joba Chamberlain. But only if you have something worthwhile to say and have some evidence to back it up. I don't chat with run-of-the-mill Yankee-haters who have a vocabulary that begins and ends with "Yankees suck."

  8. I do only if the comments are way off the wall.   I don't like the red sox at all and am a die hard yankee fan but will very seldom give any players a hard time unless it is totally an obvious act.

Varitek is a great player for sure and any ARod fan could harass him due to their fight awhile back.

I am the same way but as mentioned only when the comments are ridiculous such ARod and adultery, steroids, Jeter being a bad SS etc

  9. I always defend my team the Reds.  I get lots of thumbs down because I support them and hate email, too.  I just ignore it.  I love the Reds no matter what and no one is going to change my mind.  We are each entitled to our own opinions to support which team we choose.

  10. yes any true fan would and believe me i have to do alot of defending lately I'm an Indians fan and a Buckeye fan i had to defend them alot since last years loses to LSU and the Red Sox

  11. yes of course

  12. No, no one's perfect.

  13. This is a pretty good question. I would say I mostly defend my team. I'm a Pirates fan and I mostly hear people saying how we will never win or how bad our pitching is. It is then when I will step in and play defense. But if it is a truthful comment, for example, "Tom Gorzelanny had an awful outing last night." Then I won't really say anything, or I will agree and speak my mind.

I guess it all depends on what fans are talking about my team. If it's Phillies fans then I will definitely fire back, say a couple things and then they won't be able to say anymore.

But I agree with you Greta, about Jason Varitek. He's the motivation man no questions asked and I don't think he deserves to be negatively criticized even though he's hitting .215.

  14. Yes...unless it has to do with cheating...I justr lose interest of him even being on the team

  15. I am very defensive of the Falcons, because since they don't play very well people insult them my favorite players, and me for being a fan.I have defended Michael Vick since he started in the league and still do.Same with Deangelo Hall(even though I admit he has a huge mouth) and nothing will change that.

  16. Yeah, i defend the Cardinals but I dont' really have a favorite player. That is something to do today, think of my favorite player.

  17. When people say negative things about the Yankees, I just turn the other cheek. If I tried to defend them, I would just always be fighting with someone.

But when I see someone saying something about Posada, I usually have to say something. If they are saying something factual, even if it is negative, there isn't much I can say to that. But if they are something stupid, then I will defend him.

  18. i am a cards fan and the first thing u have to know is don't be bothered by spectators if real fans want to have a conversation about baseball then i get involved but if someone is constantly bashing your team then it's probably because they don't know anything about the sport and that is all they have to say.

  19. I'm a major Cubs fan.  When people say we have a terrible team, I just laugh at them.  I usually just ignore any negative comment toward the Cubs.  All Cubs players are my favorite so I also ignore anything said about any one of them.

  20. lol Varitek deserves to be harasssed.  whats that cubs fan in a earlier answer talking about?!?!  Us white sox fans make fun of the cubs? i dont think so. its the other way around.  So yes you should defend your favorite team, thats what fans are for.  As for players, you can make fun or be critical to one that is in a slump (or cheating with madona).

  21. yes I always do and your right no player deserves that.

    not Varitek or anyone else

my brother is a Cubs fan and I'm a White Sox fan, so I get a lot of that  "Joe Crede sucks" because he's my favorite player, but I ignore that

it bothers me when someone says that with no reason. if it's a rival I sometimes understand the situation though

good question here is a star =]

  22. most of time with my friends yes. but not with strangers

  23. i get defensive when my friends/roomates or other people make fun of jeter for being overrated or g*y. that sets me off pretty bad

but people hate on the yankees all the time now so ive ccome to just ignore it, especially the stupid comments from uneducated "fans" who know nothing about the game

  24. No offense Greta, but compared to yankees fans redsox fans have it made! As a yankees fan any time i talk to someone they usually say sometime in the conversation "yankees suck" and then i say why and they say "because they just do" and some of these people are very knowledgable fans.....i usually do but sometimes i just ignore the person because they arent worth the hassle.

  25. it depends on who is doing the criticizing. It is like someone criticizing your mother: you can do it but no one else can. I have, at times, especially this season, ripped the Indians up one side and down the other but if I hear other people doing it then I get defensive and want to toss them over the outfield wall at Progressive Field. Ok for me to do as a paying fan but not ok for someone else who is not a fan of the team. I do it because it hurts me when they do poorly - if I could will them to a championship, we'd have 20 rings by now. As for criticizing a favorite player, this year I have had to grin from ear to ear because Cliff Lee has made good, very good. Last year, he was demoted to the minors and this spring he had to fight for a spot in the starting rotation. Everyone said he was washed up. But I kept him on my fantasy baseball team and this year, for the first time ever, I watched the All Star game because there was Cliff Lee, starting for the AL. I hope I have answered your question: I can talk smack about my Indians all I want but you, Red Sox fan, you better not because it will get all medieval up in this place quick fast and in a hurry!

  26. I'll defend the Royals at every turn - somebody has to look out for the little guy and that somebody is me.

  27. it depends if ur favorite team\player is good, if they are good then u can defend them.

For example: If someone's favorite team is the Royals and he heard someone say that they suck, what is he going to do about it if they do actually suck.

Another example: What if someone's favorite player is Andruw Jones. How r u going to defend him if he cant even hit the ball 30 feet.

  28. Yeah definitely! Us Cubs fans live and have to deal with the White Sox fans too! I get pretty heated when it comes to defending them.

  29. I'm back!

Of course but sometimes I have to take a break because I'm in Mets territory. I have heard no players from the Phillies getting insulted except for Myers, I even make fun off him, but the whole team is getting insulted at. What can you make fun off with Utley and Hamels on the team.

  30. If it's way out of line I sure do. Like people blatantly stating false things. However, I usually ignore it.

  31. If someone is just flat out bashing my team or say something mean then I'll defend my team.  Most of the time I'll ignore it but if their saying **** just to say it I'll tell them to shut up.
