  1. No.  I worked as a Vet assistant on the weekends while I was in college.  I was a Biology major...but had no formal training as a Veterinary Assistant (2 year degree).  I didn't get to do any of the "nitty gritty" stuff such as surgery, but I did assist with x-rays, some medications, sterilizing equipment, etc.  Most of my job consisted of holding an animal if the doctor had to check it out and LOTS of cleaning.  I cleaned out the kennels, the office, reception area, etc.  They were closed Sunday's so I had to go to the clinic and feed, water, medicate, and walk, any animals that were there over the weekend.

It can be emotional at times.  My first day on the job I had to help hold a dog that was being put down due to old age.  Another was someone that didn't want her Basset Hound to have the puppies.  The doc basically performed an abortion and the puppies looked as if they were just starting to get hair...that one was real rough because I like Basset Hounds.

If you're looking for a pet envirnoment...you can also check out small pet stores (where I also worked) or any of the big chains like PetsMart or PetCo.  Either the vet office or pet store would be a good start if you want to work with pets.

  2. Unless they have a position as receptionist or something not dealing directly with the animals then yes you need schooling.

  3. No, not always.  You could start by working at the front desk, checking in animals, answering the phone and things like that, and possibly move up from there.  It's a great way to start in a career involving animals.
