I've been wondering about this for quite some time. Are all jews entitled to Israeli citizenship on the grounds of their religion? It's kind of what I'd expect, actually, but does anyone know more about this?

  1. Actually, a person isn't automatically eligible for Israeli citizenship when converting to Judaism. Only Orthodox conversions are recognized within Israel. Not all Jews are Israeli citizens either for that matter, anymore than every Israeli citizen is in fact Jewish, but someone who was born Jewish, under the Halacha would be eligible for citizenship, would be at least eligible if they chose. Oddly enough, people who are at least Jewish by heritage, but who aren't recognized as Jewish under Judaic law are also frequently eligible to emigrate to Israel. Since the Orthodox are in charge of all things religious in Israel, including marriage, and there are no civil marriages in Israel, it makes for a very complicated situation at times.

  2. Yes, all Jews are allowed to emigrate to Israel under the Right of Return; however, everyone has to apply for Israeli citizenship just like any other country.

  3. All Jews born into Judaism or converted through the Orthodox branch are entitled to Israeli citizenship however you are still required to apply and show proof of Jewishness.

  4. Not really. They may go and apply for the citizenship, but thats not automatically. The chances to get this are much higher, but thats all.
