  1. Travis Walton and his brother, along with Mike Rogers saw an ad in National Enquirer for a large monetary reward for the best personal UFO story. Rogers and his crew were behind schedule and about to default on their second government contract for clearing of the forest.  They could be excused from such a default in the event of some extraordinary circumstance beyond their control.  They cooked up the hoax to kill two birds with one stone.

Wiki mentions the polygraph.  There were two.  The first one didn't ask them anything about the UFO abduction.  It was still while Travis was missing.  The sheriff suspected foul play.  They were asked questions like, "Did you kill Travis Walton?"  Well, okay, they passed!  The article fails to mention that in the second test given to Walton later, the examiner was compelled by National Enquirer to sign a contract of silence for five years.  Walton failed the test.  He was caught trying to hold his breath in the belief it would throw off the polygraph. (Polygraph is total bunk, anyway, but things like trying to hold your breath are very revealing.)

Later, someone found that a relative of the Waltons had a small cabin in the woods not far from where the "abduction" took place.  And a few years later, one of the crew members involved in the hoax, (Dalice), confessed that the whole thing was fake.

But like Roswell, despite all the illuminating evidence which shows that these things didn't involve space ships at all, the myths thrive among the UFOphiles.

  2. No, there is no proof that such a thing happened, and science and logic tells me it could not happen as he told it.
