Do you believe global warming exists, and if so, have you personally researched it?

also: are scientists compromised from trying to come up with results to match the grants they are given ("we are looking for these results, a, not b") and are environmentalists trying to engender fear to further their cause?

or is everyone living in a bubble of never-gonna-happen?

  1. Yes I do and yes I have. And no, results in science are not up for sale to the highest bidder. You don't give grant money to get specific results, simply because scientists don't know what the results will be before starting their research.

  2. I haven't personally researched it but I am positive. But I have heard in like... Discovery Channel and stuff, that it IS happening because our climate is getting warmer, our ozone layer is breaking and more stuff occur as we pollute our only home! I don't want the mall to be destroyed! LOL!!

Also...ways to help the environment would be, shut off your water while you brush your teeth, turn off all lights (if not in use) Don't try to use SOOO much water (for example, don't  spend 10min taking a bath less than that is fine)

  3. No  Idea

  4. No but it's a little obvious about everything thats going on,,,DUHHHHH

  5. yes, yes, no, some do and yes.

There are some very smart scientists, like Stephen Hawking and our dear departed Carl Sagan (Cosmos reruns were on last night) who believe that our ignorance and hubris will be our undoing - that we are already past the point of no return.

There are some very smart political and religious demagogues who like that people live in a bubble and want to keep it that way.

    Edit:

Larry, I think I flat out just don't believe you.

If the "agenda" is to quantify and prove to everyone unequivocally that our interventions in the world are going poorly

    - the idea of which is supported by an overwhelming preponderance of anecdotal and circumstantial evidence, not to mention the existing massive body of hard quantified science -

why would that be a problem?

  6. Yes, I believe there is global warming and I do not now many people who dispute it.  I have researched it to the extent of reading the reports by scientists including the IPCC and the Stern review.

My interest was sparked by the evidence that climate change was adversely affecting some of the poorest communities in the world.

There is little doubt that there s global warming but the question is why.  I think there is overwhelming evidence that it is caused by the so called greenhouse gases - carbon dioxide and methane - reducing the heat that is radiated from the earth.

However as one might anticipate with such a complex system as our climate not all the questions have been answered so some experts do not agree.  But if AGW is happening the choice is between taking moderate action now or risking having to take more drastic action later

  7. Yes i do believe

    no research

but i live in australia and the weather has changed alot we get far less rain than we did 10 years ago

  8. Yes I believe the Earth warms and cools, just like it always has and always will. I have researched the subject extensively and I personally know a former climate scientist who changed careers, because of what he calls "agenda driven science". The environmentalists have been trying to get people weaned off of oil for a long time and they jumped on the GW bandwagon early.

  9. no i haven't researched it but the weathers getting warmer and not getting as cold so the average is raised u hear it on the news all the time

and also tht is wht we get 4 destroying the enviroment

  10. i do believe that global warming exists, i have been looking into it for sometime, it is a highly important subject. scientists are looking for new forms of energy, but oil companies are also coming up with new and worst forms of energy, that is cheaper as well, like liquid coal, its cheaper, but is 2/3 more of a pollutant than gas. the government is more worried about the cost, than the long term results. so yeah, they are living in a little bubble. if you want more info. go to,

www.nrdc.org, it will have everything that you need.

  11. The King is the reason for global warming...... Everywhere I go I'm HOT baby.... thankyou very much........

  13. I haven't done any research of my own (and to say that I've noticed it getting hotter is just anecdotal meaninglessness), but I have examined large numbers of reputable studies and reports from a variety of sources, to get a general feel for the science behind what's we're talking about, and I feel pretty comfortable agreeing with the scientific consensus.

Global warming is not a matter of belief, of course (like faith is) but one can make an interpretation from the data.

  14. Yes I do and yes I have.  The key papers were written by physicists and chemists, not environmentalists with a cause.  Please do not confuse politics and science.  The science is the same whatever your political beliefs are.

The results of research are not known in advance. Only one of the four most recent research grants I held produced the  initially anticipated result. In the other three cases nature turned out to be more complicated.  We scientists publish what nature gives us, period.  Grants are awarded on the basis of expertise and credibility. Publishing fake results to meet a pre-determined outcome destroys all credibility in the scientific community and eliminates any chance of ever receiving another grant through the peer review process.  Fakes are generally exposed quickly: it is much harder to fool a scientist than the general public.  The only career option for a discredited scientist is to write advertising copy for vested interests (ie Tim Ball, Fed Singer, etc.)

  15. Hi,

I believe global warming exists, and I have done a fair bit of research. The kicker is whether or not its something humans have influenced, or if its just a typical weather cycle.  Studies have shown that the earth naturally goes through warming and cooling every several thousand years.

For instance, about 10,000 years ago, we went through a warmer spell, which may have allowed primitives to migrate into Canada and ultimately what is now America.  The glaciers spanned a little less territory than they do now.

Glaciers are currently receding, and I beleive we are now at less than 50 actual named glaciers, from 150 about 50 years, so there is a dramatic warming trend.

Again, greenhouse gases are probably somewhat to blame, but are they to blame to the extent that the alarmists claim? No one really knows, but if you listen to the alarmists, New York and Florida will be underwater in the next 50 years or so, and according to them most of the damage is alread done.

The debate will continue to rage, with no real conclusion in sight, so in short,  who knows?

  16. Yes, I do.

Yes, I have researched it very thoroughly.

No, scientists are not compromised by trying to obtain grants.  You could make this argument of any scientific field, but it's simply not the case.

Those who award grants (generally government institutions like the National Science Foundation) do not say "I want you to show that global warming is being caused by humans."  They look at grant proposals, and if the proposal has scientific merit, they award a grant.

You can make an argument that environmentalists are trying to engender fear to further their cause.  Then again, their cause (global warming) is something we should probably fear.   If they are trying to engender fear, that doesn't necessarily mean they're wrong.  That's like asking if someone who is yelling at you to watch out for the beehive above your head is trying to engender fear.
