Undisciplined irrational obsessions. I've been seeing a lot of them lately. Do you think they pose any threat to our society?

  1. How can one watch the news coming out of Washington and NOT believe?

  2. yes they are a threat...... always have been.

the more I think about it, it reminds me of the same thought patterns as organized religion and we've been fighting that for ever. Hasn't gotten us far though.

    (strange section)

  3. It depends where you see them. Flying over Kansas? At work? At the Government level?

  4. Only if one obsesses it.

  5. I agree w/ none2.  And yes i think they are a threat.

  6. Of course,,,,

  7. There are definitely a lot of them, mostly masquerading as scientists.

I don't suppose they pose a threat since they're almost entirely composed of hot air and unfounded opinions

  8. Brant this world is a mysterious place, always has been, always will be....lol

  9. Sometimes read Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Chas. Mackay. I'll not copy the reviews; you can go to Amazon and look at those yourself.

I believe they are part and parcel of our society, and the things about Darwinism and the Creationists and ID are just the tip of the iceburg in our day.

History tells us that when the Royal Society was formed, it was done in secret, because it was worth your life to admit you were a "scientist" in those days.  When Leeuwenhoek invented the compound microscope, there were churchmen who wanted his hide nailed to the door! You can't just look at things and describe them-why, that's not in the Bible!

Also try "Microbe Hunters" by Paul De Kriuf, which I read in elementary school and, to my joy, dicovered they'd re-released recently. Try your library or a local school.

Joseph Campbell, in his "Myths To Live By", describes the Islamic scientiific advances, mostly in medicine, where the Greek legacy was being advanced...and then the Sunna, the concensus, which Mohamed had declared would always be right, cracked down on Islamic science, which came to a screeching halt...along with Islam.  And so the Greek legacy was given to the Christian West, which did great things, and led the way for the scientiific work today.

  10. not as much as disciplined irrational obsessions.

  11. There are many that are afflicted with dangerous psychotic disorders. These people are a danger to themselves and to those around them. The jails and mental institutions are full of them, and yes there are many wandering the streets.

  12. what do you mean

  13. No

  14. I think bigots do more then any one else.

  15. NO ONLY YOUR HEAD DOES

  16. I think know exactly what you mean but am not sure about a threat to our society but they are a threat to my sanity.  I hardly dare to talk to people for fear of releasing a torrent of their obsession.  Sports, religion, politics, s*x, diet, pets etc. everyone seems to choose one of these and it is the only thing they can respond with.

  17. Anything irrational has the potential to pose a threat to any society.

  18. Not only do I believe in them.I'm obsessed with pointing them out.Wait a minute,am I a victim of one myself?

  19. I believe the frequent occurrence of UIOs we have been experiencing is a direct result of the drop-off in the science funding that was brought about in the competitive atmosphere of the Cold War.

The All Children Left Behind Act isn't going to help this one bit.

  20. Could you give some examples...Maybe a video??

Edit..O..I KNOW!! I KNOW!! KIDS PLAYING RUNESCAPE!! (That just got disciplined at our house. The computer just  got put in storage!)

I've got to learn karate in case they try to retire mine too!!!

No..they weren't a threat to society..only a threat to the social life of the kids who are obsessed with  them!
