ALOT of people are talking about this guy, but who would actually consider him one of the favourites?

I've got my doubts... hes in the toughest draw and hes still a pup... but I'm interested in others opinions. I've just heard SO much hype about him!

  1. I really wouldn't consider a favorite. A threat, yes he is. He might deliver a few upsets, but I don't think he'll reach the 2nd week. He is on a winning streak for tournaments that didn't feature any big players (I don't consider Roddick one). He's a threat alright, but against players like Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, and the others (heck, maybe even Wawrinka), he has to work it out.

  2. I saw highlights of his match against roddick and i saw him in the final of legg mason and there's no doubt he's good, BUT many of the top players were in Beijing playing for gold. So i think he could get a few upsets but i don't think he can win the US Open this year.

  3. I think it's great people are finally talking about him. I first saw him at the French in the 1st round against Nadal last year and was really impressed. He did really well at Queens last year too. He is a great talent and on the back of 4 consecutive titles at 19 will go into the US full of confidence and without fear. I don't think he is a contender to go on and won the whole thing, but he does go in as 17 seed which means he should get to the 3rd round at least and then take it from there. I think if he makes it to the second week it will be a big step in the right direction for him.

It is similar to the Murray situation-He needs to take little steps but often if he is to reach his full, very exciting potential.

EDIT: Opps, sorry!! I am only comparing him to the development of Murray-Not to Murray himself-They both play differently and Juan Martin I'm sure has a personality too!

  4. As AP Press mentioned of the 2008 US Open as a wide open event.

I have filled men's bracket. As I was doing it, my picks became clearer, and focused. Del Potro has been riding high, yet he has not proved mighty enough at the Slams, and against top guns. I'd be impressed if he reaches the 1/4 final, and yes, he's got some tough players on his draw, Canas, Bellucci right off the bet, Wawrinka...And yes, he is still a teen at 19, but Nadal collected impressive Master's Series matches and a Roland Garros at 19. We shall see how well he plays at the Us Open, interesting indeed.

  5. Youre right! He'd have one of those 'cinderella' stories of tennis if he actually managed to win, like Maria @ 17 years old, winning Wimbledon in 04. I think he'll go far in the tournament, but I'm not sure if he can pull off the victory

I've got a big doubt, but we'll see soon! ;]

  6. Del Porto will be a threat to lots of the players of the u.s open. He  is on a hot streak and won 4 straight titles. But then people who enters a grand slams are usually pro people so it depends on how the others play or even how Del Porto plays.

  7. You've heard hype because he's one of the dark horses! He's won four straight singles titles - though they weren't in the direct ATP circuit. He's in great form and he's young and really talented. He's had some pretty major victories this year, the most recent one being the victory over Roddick for the Los Angeles title. He's not one of the FAVOURITES, but he IS a dark horse! We never know what to expect from this guy.
