Do you believe that people at the Airline tell me that few people know you have to pay to check baggage?

I was talking to some friends who work at American Airlines. They told me that most people are shocked when they are told that they have to pay to check their bags. It is news to them. Even though there has been tons of news stories about it on TV, they knew nothing about it and refuse to pay.

Do you believe it, can people be so ill informed?

some airlines allow for you to check in one bag per person free like american airlines we each checked in 1 luggage per person and we didn't have to pay anything

I absolutely believe it I work at the airport myself and people are shocked about the charges.  What is really odd is when people believe they can travel with 90lbs bags.  I mean how did they even lug those bags to the airport and they are so shocked that they are bag weight restrictions.  I think people pack everything but their brains when they come to the airport.

it can happen I had a friend who book a trip and didnt know about the baggage charges till he go to the airport

(he though they would have warned him when he booked his reservation online

I think it is a combination of people not paying attention, not knowing WHICH airlines are now charging, and confusion as to WHEN the policy takes effect, and WHO is impacted by it.  

For example, my sister has a plane ticket for an October trip but she purchased it before this new policy hit the news.  When she checks in, they will try to charge her for her checked baggage. However, if one reads the fine print of the ticket and the policy she shouldn't get charged.  They will try to charge her, but when she purchased the ticket the agreement included her check luggage.  I'm not sure if the people at the desk are trained to be able to detect when the ticket was purchased (whether the new policy effects the person) or if they are told to charge everyone.

People don't pay attention to news stories that don't affect them.  Many people only fly once a year, if that.  I'm not surprised at all.
