just because they have served in the military, or because they are a higher rank to you?

Isn't blind subservience bad considering that there are military members who rape, kill and beat their wives? Shouldn't people be given respect for being good people, not simply for their job?

  1. You should respect their service to their country but that doesn't mean you should respect the individual.  That is another thing entirely.  Individual respect is earned.

  2. No, but from the extra info it seems the question for you runs a little deeper.

Those who choose to serve, and serve honorably should be respected.

Why do you focus on the military when you you say: "Isn't blind subservience bad considering that there are military members who rape, kill and beat their wives?"

Are you really so ignorant you believe anyone with any intelligence thinks those people should be respected?

And, is it not possible to respect that someone may have served honorably, but expect they should be held accountable for their non-military related crimes?

Frankly, it sounds like you are attempting to make some other point, although not well.

I would just add that if someone risks their life tomorrow to save someone when Gustaf makes landfall, that action clearly deserves respect. If we learned they had committed some detestable crime, it should not diminish what they did, nor should the act of heroism diminish the crime they committed.

  3. respect is earned, but people who serve their country  should be treated with respect ,they put their lives on the line  so people can live their lives in relative freedom  &  with the right to question,

millions have died for us to have this right that is abused  on a regular basis

  4. We respect the office even when we don't have respect for the office-holder as an individual.  Like Clinton or Bush, whichever one you despise, is/was still President.

Now, of course, if a soldier rapes or murders, he is a criminal.  He has disgraced the military he serves.  Such a person deserves prison or worse.

Have you ever noticed that when the police arrest a suspected robber or rapist, they usually refer to him as a "gentleman"?  That is to remind everybody that we respect his humanity, even if we despise the crime.

So I don't quite get the problem.  You give respect where respect is due, and punishment where punishment is due.  And if you don't like somebody, try to avoid him.

  5. Respect is somthing you earn not given to you

  6. Ive seen some of your answers and no, you don't have to respect me, a simple thank you would suffice.  True, there are bad people in the military, but we are a small percentage of the entire population, so of course any jump in domestic abuse, rapes, suicides or anything will seem like a huge and alarming percentage jump.  You should respect people in the military, we willingly choose to serve whenever and wherever we are needed, for you and everyone else in the country.  Don't use unconditional as part of your question, as in life, there are hardly any 100 percent truths, you leave yourself closed off to a fair and equal debate.

  7. Who said people should be given unconditional repect? No one in their right mind would say that.

  8. Veterans don't HAVE to be respected by civilians, but it's just a nice thing to do.  If I just got back from Iraq, I wouldn't want some civilian treating me like a piece of c**p.  It would make me question why I fight to protect these people if that's how they're going to act towards us.  Unconditional respect sounds a little strong, but military personnel do deserve some appreciation...unless a particular soldier acts like a prick towards everyone, and then I wouldn't show that person an ounce of respect.  As for someone being of higher rank than you, you don't have to respect the person, you have to respect the rank they hold.  I have people over me I can't stand and I think they're horrible people, but I still have to show them respect because they outrank me.  It's funny, I know.

  9. like NOOOO!!....so what if you was a service person means jack! you earn Respect and don't get it on a plate.....
