Do you believe that space elevators are possible?

Space heaters are possible, but not space elevators.  The material at the bottom would be so thick as to have to have a mountain for the first level!

Science fiction is fun but often impractical.  We have used science fiction for our guide, often, but in this case, we cannot.

You are more likely to get the truth out of a politician, Republican or Democrat, that get an elevator to space.  Or is it the other way around?

Yes. The only problem is in strength of materials.

But I don't think it's going to happen.

In theory.  THe problem is that materials science is nowhere near providing a substance that would withstand the stresses of weather and gravity fluctuations.  also you could only build one down.  you can't start from earth.  that necessitates a strong manufacturing presence in space and the ability to capture a near earth asteroid for materials.  we're a long way (unfortunately) from the preconditions needed to even think about such a project.
