The Chinese launched an invasion of Japan or South Korea.

The other day I was thinking about whether the United States would go to war with China if they invaded South Korea or Japan. I understand how the United States might due to it's military obligation to these countries and since Japan and South Korea are such important geo-political positions for the United States in East Asia.

However, on the other hand the United States might not due to financial problems, its involvement in the Middle East, recent disregard for past treaties and the fact that never in history have two nuclear powers gone to war against each other.

Im just looking for some opinions on this and please, keep your answers intellectual.

  1. I think its possible the Chinese may come into Afghanistan, after 16 of their policeman were killed and many wounded by muslims near the border.

  2. Yes we would go to war with China if that really happend. Japan is one of our biggest countries we trade with. Plus Japan can handle themselves any ways. People underestimate the power of the Japanese military. They have the second best Navy in the world and they also have imported jet fighters from the U.S. Plus China would only shoot themselves in the foot if they did. China is a very dependent economy and they would lose lots of jobs from American corporations that have factories over there.

  3. Yes the United States would declare war on China if they invaded our allies. Above and beyond that, everyone would support us.  In any case, China does not have the logistics to invade either of those places successfully. Their focus is Taiwan.

  4. Absolutely. We have defense treaties with Japan and South Korea, and will help defend them. We will most likely defend Taiwan if they declare Independence.

h**l, we may even help protect Russia if the Chinese attack siberia!

The korean war in the early 50's was the closest we have had with 2 nuclear powers fighting each other (Chinese and Russian troops fought with the N. Koreans near the end).

I believe that no countries would use nukes unless nuked first, because if that country were the instigator, than most of the world would declare war on them. Until we can get other planets to settle on (earth-like planets), I doubt that nuclear weapons will ever be used by a soverigin nation against another soverigin nation. The consequences are too great.

  5. the US would fight the Chinese as the US forces in the area are very formidable if not in numbers than certainly in capability. There are military forces in both countries they would have no choice but to fight to defend themselves. the US also has a wide range of nuke responses to the Chinese thus the Chinese know that to attack is quite pointless they have no way of coming out on top. It should also be noted that the Japanese and South Korean military forces use top of the line US military equipment they would pound the heck out of a Chinese military force.

  6. Yes, but China is more likely to invade Taiwan and the US would defenitley help defend them.

  7. Yes. Because the US has forces based in South Korea and Japan. The security agreements shared between the US and these countries would require the US to fight and defend these nations in an event of a Chinese attack.
