Do you think that Sport MMA ( commericalized MMA ) isn't jujitsu? if so why? and one more thing if you think that sport MMA is just "jujitsu" in disguise do you think MMA has hurt the art forms of jujitsu in general? and if so why?

  1. I feel that Sport MMA is a bastardized form of jujitsu. I only say this though because it seems that everyone and their dog cross trains BJJ which itself is a customized form of jujitsu.

The removal of striking from BJJ to focus on grappling branched it away, but it's adoption into Sport MMA has forced fighters to adopt striking techniques from another martial arts to compensate in this area.

That being said, Sport MMA could also be called a bastardized form of kickboxing, since this is the striking style most fighters seem to have choosen.

If you look it, Sport MMA is sort of a Boat of Theseus situation in its relation to the original jujitsu.

  2. Hmmm William you seem kinda hung up on Japanese jiu-jitsu recently I don't know why but if your interest helps you with your system then great I'm delighted for you.

Regarding jiu-jitsu in sport mma yes there is an element but true Japanese jiu-jitsu goes that step further as you know, ie: we will break the arm and yes we are taught to stamp on the head prior to doing a cross over arm lock ( ude-hishigi-juji-gatame ) all be it in a form of japanese jiu-jitsu variation.

As for sport mma hurting true undiluted jiu-jitsu ..NO!!! as it's sport and health and safety must prevail, hence why judo as you must recall was invented as a safe form of practicing jiu-jitsu.

    Best wishes :)***

  3. I think MMA is closer now to what it should be than we have ever seen it, a true blend of all different martial arts with each individual fighter using what suits them best. Now could this be translated as just jiu jitsu? I guess if you wanted to translate it that way it could be, but that doesn't make it the case across the board. I don't consider myself to be a jiu jitsu expert what so ever, but I have studied both Japanese and Brazilian jiu jitsu and neither of the schools I studied at included any striking and the BJJ school only did it with the gi. Which is why I didn't stay there long. I know that your view on JJ is that it does and should include striking and I agree with you on that point, but it is not taught that way in lots of places. I could also tell you that the first time I was taught how to do and arm bar was in a Shaolin Do Chinese martial arts class, but I know that most Chinese martial arts schools don't teach it that way. Just as you should understand that many JJ schools don't include striking. Just as you feel JJ should include everything I think all martial arts should include everything and I think that historically they most likely did. People divided true combat styles down into components of those previous true styles of combat to make many seperate arts out of what I have no doubt was originally intended to be all ranges and all situations true combats styles. If that is jiu jitsu to you then great if I want to call it by a different name then again great, at the end of the day I don't care what name or label you slap on it, if it teaches all ranges both standing and on the ground I am down with it.

Do I think that MMA has hurt JJ, not any more than it has hurt any other style that we see used a lot in mma. Has some of the JJ technique becaome a little sloppy and are there things missing or under utilized, absolutely no doubt about it. The same can be said for kickboxing/ Muay Thai to. How many truly good knees do you see in MMA? Some, but not all that many, lots are thrown sloppily and without making contact with the knee cap. I think that is just the result of guys trying to train in several different styles/ arts with out really mastering any of them.

I'm not sure what your point is here bro, but for me call it whatever you want to. If you love it then I'm happy for you, I love what I do and would like to think that as a fellow martial artist you would be happy for me. Which came first the chicken or the egg? I don't know and don't care, I like chicken so I'm gonna eat it. Which came first JJ or karate, I don't know and don't care I like it so I'm going to do it and be happy while I'm doing it.

  4. Why are you getting hung up on semantics and language translations?

    Ju - jistu

    Nin - jitsu

I could go on with other examples of "jitsu". That doesnt mean it's the same martial art.

There is a difference between a "jitsu" and "do".

MMA used to be a battle of contrasting styles, karate versus kung fu, etc.

Now days, MMA is it's own style. It's not boxing, but it incorporates boxing. It's not wrestling, but it incorporates wrestling, it's not Muay Thai, but it incorporates Muay Thai.

With BJJ, you have "gi" and " no gi ". "No Gi" ju jitsu isnt the same as MMA ju jitsu. There are similarities, but they are not the same. It's different to set an armbar with, or without, the threat of being struck in the face by a punch. That's the difference.

There are many more differences, but your recent posts lead me to believe you are on a political campaign to declare Ju Jitsu the be all, end all of all martial arts.

What is your motivation in this? Your "facts" are very subjective, not objective.

    It just isnt so.

    James

  5. William... Come on, man... Make up your mind... Either it's all jujutsu or it isn't ;)

So, how can there even be an MMA? "I combine jujutsu, jujutsu, and jujutsu..." The mind boggles...

Look at it this way: if it exposes the huddled masses to an interest in martial arts, those who really care will seek out the best in the martial arts world. I don't mean the styles, but the purity -- real budo. If they don't, then no amount of commenting on it is going to change it. Those who would water down their art for sport deserve the end results. It doesn't have an effect on my training one way or the other.
