  1. Yeah... they should get equal pay... It doesn't matter if men can play 5 sets or no... Good for them!!!... Men and Women have different body types but this doesn't mean that they don't exercise the same or give their best  to play professional tennis... when someone is trying the same with another you can't pay him less....! this is racism! As someone here said... Nature gave man more physical strength than woman has!!!....

Besides woman in also made differently so she can give birth to children!!!!! There is no way women could be like men!!!

    Equal pay to everybody guys...

  2. its a simple question to answer.

if i was spending my hard earned on a tennis match i would pick a mens game with the match being played faster and the chance of it lasting longer.

if the women started playing 5 sets i would still watch the mens games purely for faster more skillfull games.

that to me is why men are worth more than women it is all about entertainment and in virtually every sport that men and women compete it is the men that gets the punters paying the cash.

  3. My take on this argument that I posted a while back:

Okay here's my response to this... We are in 2008!!!!

I am so sick and tired of hearing these kinds of baseless arguments. It's about time that we as individuals started

treating people as equals rather than second class citizens. From your logic, that men should be paid more money because they play 5-sets as opposed to women who play 3-sets... base on this warped, close-minded way of thinking, my question to you is: why stop there? Why don't we start to award prize money based on the individual's race, or class, or nationality or even religious affiliation? If we can say that gender and s*x is the reason why women are paid less than their male counterparts, then let's add other factors to heighten the inequalities and injustices that are so rampant today!!!

People need to realize that all these reasons why men deserve to be paid more than women are outdated and old fashioned and therefore has no bearings in today's world anymore. We have come too far as a species and have made too much progress for this mindset and frame work of thinking to dominate our present society and the human conditioning. That's the bottom line!!!

The logic that men exudes more endurance during their five-set marathons and works harder for their prize money, that a men's match lasts longer than a womens' match, that men are stronger than women and therefore women can't play five set matches, are soo ridiculous in today's world, when you consider the insurmountable progress that women has made in society over the last couple decades, and continues to do so to this day and beyond.

I believe reigning Wimbledon Ladies Champion, Venus Williams said it best in her essay published in the Times on the eve of the 2006 Wimbledon:

"I feel so strongly that Wimbledon’s stance devalues the principle of meritocracy and diminishes the years of hard work that women on the tour have put into becoming professional tennis players.

I believe that athletes — especially female athletes in the world’s leading sport for women — should serve as role models. The message I like to convey to women and girls across the globe is that there is no glass ceiling. My fear is that Wimbledon is loudly and clearly sending the opposite message....

Wimbledon has argued that women’s tennis is worth less for a variety of reasons; it says, for example, that because men play a best of five sets game they work harder for their prize money.

This argument just doesn’t make sense; first of all, women players would be happy to play five sets matches in grand slam tournaments....

Secondly, tennis is unique in the world of professional sports. No other sport has men and women competing for a grand slam championship on the same stage, at the same time. So in the eyes of the general public the men’s and women’s games have the same value.

Third, ... we enjoy huge and equal celebrity and are paid for the value we deliver to broadcasters and spectators, not the amount of time we spend on the stage. And, for the record, the ladies’ final at Wimbledon in 2005 lasted 45 minutes longer than the men’s....

Wimbledon has justified treating women as second class because we do more for the tournament. The argument goes that the top women — who are more likely also to play doubles matches than their male peers — earn more than the top men if you count singles, doubles and mixed doubles prize money. So the more we support the tournament, the more unequally we should be treated! But doubles and mixed doubles are separate events from the singles competition. Is Wimbledon suggesting that, if the top women withdrew from the doubles events, that then we would deserve equal prize money in singles? And how then does the All England Club explain why the pot of women’s doubles prize money is nearly £130,000 smaller than the men’s doubles prize money?

I intend to keep doing everything I can until Billie Jean's original dream of equality is made real. It’s a shame that the name of the greatest tournament in tennis, an event that should be a positive symbol for the sport, is tarnished."

To add to this, I just want to conclude by saying that if anyone agrees that in this heavily globalize man's world that continues to dominate our every facet of life, to suggest that men are somehow being disrespected, devalued or oppressed in anyway, is simply laughable to me.

Women should always be treated as equals and respected for what they contribute to the sport and therefore be awarded for such, regardless of these outdated beliefs that keeps getting thrown around every so often .

That was from a previous post...

Last night I had a lengthy discussion with a close friend of mines about this equal money issue. He was saying that women need to play best of five set matches in order to be paid equally. While there isn't a single doubt in my mind that these women will in fact be able to play a 5 set match, I was telling him, even if they were to enforce this rule, I highly doubt that it will work.

Okay here are my reasons why a 5 set women's match would not work.

It's a known fact that the top seeded men tend to lose earlier in the Slams than the women. Why is that? Yes it can be said that there is more depth to the men's game than the women's. However I believe it has more to do with he nature of these 5 set matches.

Tennis is not a sport that is solely based on an athlete's physical prominence. Unlike most sports, tennis has that added mental advantage to it. Therefore this is why you see so many men lose the third set after winning the first two sets. It's not that they are getting tired or they started playing badly. It has more to do with that mental aspect of the game rather than the physical edge one player has on the other. Therefore this is why you see so many of the top men bow out so early in the slams. It's difficult for them to keep that mental edge over their opponents for more than three sets of play.

So if we were to introduce the 5 set game into women's tennis, and we see the top women in the world consistently losing in the opening rounds of every slam, like their male counterparts, then I willing to bet that tournament organizers and sponsors alike, are going to pull their sponsorships out of the game. Because no one is going to put millions of dollars into the womens game only to see to 120th rank woman in the world square of against the 67th rank woman in the world, in the finals of lets say, Wimbledon. At the end of the day it all comes back down to dollars and cents.

The men's game has been known to produced many finals that included at least one unseeded player. The most recent example being Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's run at this years Australian Open. (Tell me: how many of you ever heard of Tsonga before the finals at the Aussie Open?) The average tennis fan will be able to answer this, but when it comes to ratings and sponsorships, it is the large group of people who aren't really tennis fans that the tournament organizers and sponsors are looking to draw. Kind of like how most of us don't really care about golf, but when Tiger Woods is playing, we can't help ourselves but tune into golf on TV.

If this was to begin to happen in the women's game, it will ruin the sport. There is already all the talk this year about the top four seeds not making the Quarters. Imagine if Venus and Serena was injured, and the top four seeds were ousted, would anyone still be watching Wimbledon at this point!!!

When I explained this to my friend, we both agreed that a better compromised that should make all parties happy, was to have the women continue to play their three set matches, but instead have them play up to 10 games per set.

  4. THEY SHOULD GET THE SAME MONEY, THE GIRLS CAN'T HELP IT IF THEIR BODIES ARE NOT AS MUSCULAR AS THE GUYS. IT'S NATURE, IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT!

  5. Well yes they should , but they should then play in 5 set matches not three as at present

A good ladies game can be more entertaining than a mens where the big serve dominates

  6. I agree with the 5-set argument, but think about also the quality of the men's game compared to the women's game. It is obvious that there is less skill and more errors committed in the woman's game. Think about the average rally in the women's game. How many points do you see ending after only two or three strokes on an error? Even the best of the women like Ivanovic and Sharapova committ errors often. Henin and Clijsters were the truly skilled players and now that they're retired women's tennis is probably going to be dominated by the power of the Williams sisters.

  7. The argument of 5 sets versus 3 sets is not a very good one.

The best argument for a pay disparity between men & women is an economic one.  If people are willing to pay more to see Men's Tennis, then the men should receive higher compensation.  If they're willing to pay more to see women, then women should receive more money.  If fans are willing to pay the same amount for both, then men & women should receive equal compensation.

  8. But if they gave equal pay then they would be breaking the rule of pay inequality...

I feel they should even if its just to set a good example to all the employers out there who pay men more than women for no reason other than gender.

  9. If women want equal pay they should be treated equally, which means they should go in the draw with the men. The women want it both ways - as usual.

  10. If you worked a fifty hour week would you think it fair that someone working a thirty hour week was earning the same pay?  I don`t think so...

  11. definitely

i asked my mum that the other day

although men do play more sets

but thats another thing - why do people think women cant handle playing up 2 5 sets

im sorry but there are many women as fit and healthy as men to play 5 sets!!!

  12. Mens games can goto 5 sets women's sets never go more than 3. If you let women play up to 5 sets then fine give them equal pay.

  13. no. the guys have to go trough 5 sets and a man that never loses wimbledon. girls only have to do three tops plus their number one already fell against one unknown girl. the guys deserve the extra cash.
