Do you clip your birds wings?

I have had a budgie that I clipped the wings, a cockatiel that I did for awhile, but then stopped and let her fly around, and also an indian ringneck that I didn't ever clip the wings. I now have a pineapple conure (10") and I have been debating whether or not to clip her wings. I do have a flight suit for the bird when we go outside to keep her safe and all the windows in my house have draps so there is not really a chance of her flying into windows. We also keep the bathroom door shut and we have a door in the kitchen that we can shut so the bird would not be able to get in there. When the windows are open

Do you clip your birds wings or do you let them fly? I have always liked when my birds were able to fly around, but I'm not sure if I am going to this time because so many vets are against letting your bird's flight feathers grow. Thanks.

  1. all my birds are unclipped

  2. I let my birds fly we once got a bird that had her wings clipped and we had another one that could and every time we let them out to play the girl always got hurt because she wanted to fly with the other bird and when she tried she would fall and hurt herself and that's how we think she died from falling. So i am totally against wing clipping.

  3. i clipped my budgies wings as soon as i got him, but i loved seeing him fly around and to me. i let his wings grow out and as he was flying about someone opened the door to the room he was in and he got loose in the hallway. he crashed into every wall then fell down the stairs. thankfully there was no injury and i clipped his wings as soon as i could. he sits downstairs with me and my cockatiel tiko now. tiko couldent have ever been tamed without his wings clipped. he flew away from me every time i took him out because i bought him as an adult bird who lived in a pet shop. when i clipped his wings he didnt like it at first, but now he loves sitting up on his cage with my budgie quin. during the supper is a very good time to clip your birds wings because people tend to leave the doors and windows open to let the cool air in. it also helps them bond with you, havig to rely on you to keep them safe and for their transportation. i think its the safest way to go. ive heard terrible stories of birds escaping and flying away, later to be found chewed up by a cat.

    i hope this helps :)

  4. You need to do more to bird-proof your home other than drapes. Buy stove covers for the stove eyes and put her away when cooking, make sure toilet lids are closed (you wouldn't believe the number of birds that drown in toilets every year). If you do clip her wings make sure you take her to a proffessional, most groomers will do it for 10 dollars, clipping your own birds wings is never a good idea, 1. it instills fear of the owner and 2. you might hit a quick

  5. Oh My,

What a question..... Do you know that in Germany it is against the law to clip a parrots wings? They consider it cruelty to animals. Interesting that the people here don't think that a parrot is smart, that they can not learn about windows, mirrors and other dangers with flying. They are built for flying, so how could not flying be healthy. Almost all of their muscles are used in flying, the lungs are excriseed, their heart, everything. I do not know of a single Avian Vet that prefers a clip over flighted.

I have over 50 pets, breeders and baby birds in my aviary and I know a number of breeders that will say the same thing a flight bird is happier, healthier and will live longer then a clipped bird.

The trick to maintaining a flighted bird, you have to provide the right training. It takes less then 72 hours to teach a bird about Windows, mirrors and other things like that. A flighted bird will not drown in the sink or bathroom bowl their wings will allow them to escape unharmed.

Some birds have to be clipped, but this should be due to health reason only...

And Never, Never clip only one wing, clip equally on both side. You do not want them to crash, they should be able to fly graceful down and not drop like a rock.

  6. My parents have 2 parrots, 2 cocatiels, and one conour (sp) They only clip one of the parrots wings, becuase she will attack people she doesn't like, or people who are getting more attention than she is.  I think if you don't have to worry about the bird being safe, or people being safe from the bird then you shouldn't clip the wings, unless thats what YOU want to do

  7. its kind of your own opinion I cant change that but if you like them to fly around then I wouldnt but if you would like them cut I would take it to a vet if it were me I would be to nervous to cut them myself
