  1. I hope Ricky knows that there are parts of New Jersey that are South of the Mason-Dixon line.   I bet about half the people that refer to Dixieland don't even know where the Mason-Dixon line IS.  And would you then say that San Diego and LA are Southern?  I don't think so.

    Sorry for the detour I think the answer to the original question is YES.

  4. Ricky is definitively right since you are asking this in the geography section. But my guess is that when you say "consider" you are including the cultural usage of the term southern.

    In popular usage "southern" is not necessarily the same as "south". It implies history as much as culture. That is why we find it hard to say that San Diego is a "southern" city. It is no doubt in the "south" of California an of the US as a whole, but we are used to consider all California as "western".

    Otherwise why do we say "Midwest" in stead of "Midusa" or something closer to US geography?
