Is 'indie' a sound/aesthetic or simply a financial term (say, independent of major record labels)? In your opinion.

  1. Artistic. For some reason you can always tell an indie band from a band with a major label.

  2. I think its a financial term used to market the band, their music sounds no different than normal but it does sound cooler

  3. artistic

    -but i spell it indy

  4. I usually use it as a genre.

  5. The first thing that comes to my mind is the genre. Like the other person said, you can always tell if a band is indie, even if you cant really explain the genre. If you know indie, you just know.

  6. Artistic.

  7. I say it's a financial term.

  8. All it means to me is that you are operating without the financial baking or support of a major label. It does not mean that you are new or hip, or even good... it just means that you are busting your butt and that you have yet to find a sympathetic ear... so break down your own gear, load your van, and get as much at taco bell as you can for $4.17.... and crash out at a girls pad not because she is hot or that you like her... but becuase she has a shower, a couch, and some food.... That is what INDY means to me.

  9. i think it used to be mainly a financial term but now... well now 'indie' has been adopted as a label for one of the recent trends, which is something i can say many things about but won't because i don't want to ramble or sound like a fool.

however, i will say that i think it's become more of a marketing term now rather than an artistic or financial one.

...i think i might add a few more words later.

  10. Financial I suppose.

I always thought that it meant they were signed to an independent record label.
