  1. Definitely. One study has shown that older Americans who are clinically depressed are more than twice as likely to die within a specified time period as older Americans who do not suffer from depression.

Another study showed that, of 81 families studied who carry the gene that makes you more pre-disposed to depression,  deceased members of the 81 families died at an age eight years younger than the general population and over 40 percent died before the age of 65.

As far as bipolar depression (manic-depressive illness), the suicide rate is 10 to 20 times that of the general population.

There is also evidence linking depression with many other diseases, such as  coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancer, chronic pain, disability, chronic fatigue and obesity.

So......yes, I consider it to be a serious illness.  And not just mental.

  2. Yes.A serious mental illness which can lead to suicide.More and more people are becoming depressed due to their omega 3 deficient diet.

Depression is caused by the lack of serotonin in the brain which is caused by the lack of omega 3 fatty acids in the brain.

Most of humanity is deficient in omega 3 and this deficiency is what is causing all of mankinds problems. The main cause of all consequences that become the cause.

  3. yes i have it and it is a terriable thing to have. i want to feel happy but i dont know how to.

  4. Yes, it's serious.  As part of my bipolar episode, I had severe depression for three years.  I rarely left my room during this time.

  5. yes it is serious. it can be very debilitating, it can make you feel worthless and hopeless, meaning you don't enjoy life. it can lead to suicide.

  6. Depression is not the sign of a weak minded person or can it be willed away. It makes you into a person that is unlike the person you once were. It causes many people to want to die and many of them do end up killing them selves.

I myself suffer from depression and have attempted suicide. I'm nothing  like the person I once was.

It is very serious and should be looked at as a mental condition.

    Take care
