Do you consider tipping as mandatory because I do not?

I understand the whole speil but in the end tipping is for service and if you don't get tipped even if you were given good service then that is I think the unfortunate hazards of the job. It is not the customer's responsibility to augment that person's wages. After saying that I do tip for service. I am a good tipper BUT only if the person deserves it and I take offense at any establishment that tacks it onto the bill

  1. Its not mandatory.  It is a socially accepted custom.  Normal service should be tipped at 15 % minimum and 20% after 4 PM.

If you don't tip I would advise you not to return to the same restaurant as who knows what could happen to your food behind a closed kitchen door.

  2. Go ahead and tip.  Or don't eat out.

  3. Every server that does a good job waiting on his/her customers deserves somewhat of a tip.  People who are careless and don't seem to care about their customers do not deserve a tip.  I always tip if the service is good, and usually still do if it's just ok, but if I have a bad waitress/waiter, they don't get a tip most of the time.

  4. It's not mandatory, it is just a very accepted practice.. However, if we didn't tip the prices of the food would be a LOT more expensive.

Restaurants don't have to spend a lot of wages on their servers so they are able to keep the food prices lower. If we took out tipping in the USA, servers wouldn't care about you as much and the food would be a lot more!

  5. in response to ur added comment... minimum wage in the US is around 8 something an hour.... but i guess waitresses/waiters dont qualify for minimum wage... many get paid as low as 3 or 4 dollars an hour and make most of their money on tips...

  6. Yes, of course the tip should reflect service, but you have to understand that tipping is a part of culture, whether you like it or not. Maybe what you perceive as bad service is just due to short-staffing, a busy restaurant, or a plain old bad day. No one's going to walk into your job and nit-pick and not pay you based on their perception of YOUR performance.

The server would have to pretty much spit on me for me to stiff him or  her. I think the least I've ever left is 15%, and that was for horrible service. I really think everyone should serve for a week, and then see where they stand on tipping!

  7. Clearly people who have to ask this question have never had to work as servers. While the argument can stand as to why the customer should have to tip, point is, if the business paid servers more than $3.00 an hour, your food prices would be a lot higher. You may not agree with tipping, but it is a commonly known fact that if you go out to eat, you should be tipping.

Also, the gratuity which is added to a bill is not to offend, it is to ensure the server will not be screwed over. And believe me, just when I seem to have faith that a table will tip me well (even though I've run my feet off for them), and I decide to not add a tip, I always get screwed. So just understand it is to ensure the server will be taken care of.

  8. If you don't want to tip, do everyone a favor who depends on tips and pick up a  $2 TV dinner. If you can't afford the tip you can't afford the meal.

  9. It's not mandatory, it's customary. You my dear should read a book on etiquette. My Aunt raised 4 kids waitressing and if you think for one moment they get paid a regular hourly wage like you and me you are sadly mistaken. They depend on tips to make ends meet.

Indeed, people that work in the service industry are taking a chance...taking a chance they don't have to serve someone like you.

  10. It depends on where you are eating out.  It is insulting to a good server to leave no tip (especially if you have a large party and a big bill, think about the amount of effort it would take him/her).  It is foodservice ettiquette to leave one penny on the table if the service was terrible and you want the server to know it (no tip at all can be brushed off as a forgetful customer sometimes).

It is well known that, despite serving being a part of a waiter/waitresses job, they are paid much less (sometimes as low wage per hour as $2.75-4) and they depend on those tips to make up the money they need which is why they are serving you in the first place.  But this fact is NOT so well known:  They also have to pay taxes on those tips, which are calculated automatically by the amount of the bill of each of their tables.  If you stiff a good server, they are paying taxes on your bill out of their own pocket.  Very mean thing to do, don't  you agree?  If you stiff a bad server, they literally have to pay for it.
