Do you currently need a passport to travel between the US and Canada?

I heard they recently changed the laws to where you DO need a passport, but I wasn't sure if that was only for travel between the US and Mexico, or if it included Canada.

I also just heard from someone in New York that you only need your birth certificate to go to Canada. So what is the actual case?

  1. Yes you do, in order to cross the border from Canada to the USA you are required to show a valid passport. Not sure about coming into canada though.

No, not until June 2009.  That is assuming that you mean travel by land.  All you need until then is proof of citizenship (valid passport, expired passport, birth certificate) + valid photo government ID showing your name, d.o.b. and address (driver's licence, government ID card, etc.).  Cheers!!

  3. You need a passport to FLY to and from Canada.  To travel by LAND, you may use your birth certificate and photo I.D.  See site below.
