Do you like train travel? Which train trips are, or have been your favorites? I used to ride between Portland and LA, it has some wonderful scenery like Mt. Shasta and the coastline, the club cars are always fun, you meet interesting people. Any memorable train trips you'd care to talk about?

  1. I love to travel by train.

I did never mind being on the train going to work, although I am glad now I work nearer home and I do spend less time commuting.

But my most cherished train trips are the long distance ones I have done.

A few years back I traveled in Australia and did both the Indian Pacific and the Ghan, so east to west and north to south, at times it was misery, not being able to sleep the worst, but overall I was happy.

One of the better things about train travel is that you can meet people. In car travel you can only meet people at stops, in trains there are often great people to talk with. I have met many people, often you do not even get a name, sometimes you exchange addresses never to use.

I have been on fast modern trains, Shinkansen in Japan, the TGV in France, on slow, older trains, like the one from Winnipeg to Churchill in Canada, on commuter trains and on holiday trains, underground trains in many cities in many countries, and overall I enjoyed the experience.

I hope to add many more rail trips in the rest of my life, long and famous ones and the normal ones for just a day into town.
