Question:

Do you ever capitalize after quotation marks?

What would be correct?

"Don't do that!" he said.

"Don't do that!" He said.

If the sentence in the quote is complete, should you capitalize what comes after it? What if the quoted sentence ends in a comma?

Thanks for the help!

  1. The first one is correct - do not capitalize.  The only reason you would is if you're starting a new paragraph right after the quote.

Same with if the sentence ends with a comma - for example:

"Don't do that," he said, "you could get hurt."

    and/or

"Don't do that," he said.  "You could get hurt."

  2. The he is lowercase; complete or ending with a comma.
