What sort of potential person is going to waste, why is this person giving up hopes on something, then help them if you can.

My brother hates school, and hates talking to people.  He has so little self confidence, that he doesnt even try, because he doesnt believe he can do anything.  But when we're alone, and I talk to him, he has so much to say.  He's really smart.  And he invents things in his room when he's alone that actually work!  But he doesnt do anything with it.  I feel horrible when he does this.

that depends on your definition of "waste"..

some people let their potentials and talents get wasted for different reasons :

- some people don't even realize that what they have is a gift..

or they tend to underestimate & have doubts about their potentials in the first place..

- some people don't put their talents out to show because they don't really want the spotlight that would probably come along with it..

- or maybe sometimes they just need a little "push"

perhaps, some empathetic encouragement to prompt them to take action..

Yes it is especially evident in the teenagers who turn up to class without their eqipment and sit through and entire class without doing a scrap of work.... unfortunately you cant make someone do something they dont want to do you can only provide the opportunities to them and hope they take them.

yes - very much.  But I've learnt that if i give over all my potential to try to rescue those who don't want rescued, then that's another life going to waste - and the only one I have.  Change starts and ends with me and my help is something offered only to those who ask or will receive it these days.
