Do you ever wake up uncertain of where or who you are?

I do have bipolar disorder, and frequently have spells of severe insomnia. Besides mood stabilizers, I take Klonopin, Ambien (as needed), and Abilify at bedtime. But even if I take an afternoon nap, I frequently wake up, and for a few seconds I look all around my apartment. I have no idea where I am and am not even certain who I am. Then it all comes rushing back to me. I told my psychiatrist and he said, "Hmmm" and made a note on my chart then told me to discontinue the Ambient completely. But the symptoms still go on a month later. Anyone else ever have anything like this.

  1. Yes.  I don't think I ever woke up and didn't recall who I am, but I do wake up and wonder where I am.  Sometimes, especially if it's dark, it takes me awhile to figure it out.

Ambien is a dangerous drug.  It made me forget everything!  It gave me psychotic episodes that scared my husband.  Needless to say, I no longer take it.  Seroquel works better for me.

  2. If it all comes rushing back to you immediately, then what you're experiencing is probably just a response to the side effects of all the medication you're on.

If at any time during daily activities (not immediately following or just before sleep) you are suddenly not sure of yourself or your surroundings discuss it with your doctor. That might be an indication of some other illness.

Ambien is well known for causing people to sleep walk and go out and drive and do all kinds of things with no recollection of having done so. I took it myself for about a year and began sleepwalking and going out at night with no memory or only vague memories of what happened. That's why your doctor said "Hmm" and wanted you off of it.

  3. I have pretty bad anxiety and panic attacks, and sometimes I get moments where I forget where I am, who I am and what it is that i'm doing. Luckily mine seem to only last a few seconds, and I am usually able to remind myself. It's scary as h**l though.
