Question:

Do you ever wish that NASCAR would go back to old school?

What I mean by old school:

If you drive a PONTIAC, you have to have a Pontiac engine under the hood--not a Chevy.

If you sell the car only in FWD, you must race the car using only FWD.

IF the biggest engine you sell the car with is only a 3.0 V6, the biggest engine you can race the car with is a 3.0 V6, etc.

  1. YES, GET THE d**n TOYOTAS OUT OF THERE. NASCAR IS MY LOVE OF LIFE. NASCCAR48

  2. who would be stupid enough to buy a car that you could only run a 6 cylinder in

    that just dumb

you wanna go back to old school let em take them restrictor plates off on superspeedways

and bring a car that looks like a chevy or a ford or whatever

  3. Yes I do. I miss the old school ways of doing things.

  4. Once upon a time they raced like this and no one sat around crying for days, weeks and months later, they got over it!

Yes, I wish it would go back to old school..

  5. Yes but not with FWD V6's! That's just lame.

HAWK M: They ALL still use a 9" Ford rearend.

  6. Most definitely I often wonder what it would be like today if Dale Sr. never passed away.

  7. Old school was the best of all.  I love NASCAR!!

  8. Very much. I wish the cars were closer to "stock" cars again and that the high dollar teams would not be so dominant. I miss the days when everyone on the track was a potential race winner.

  9. Yep

Like Schiller said, we have to, in some way, incorporate the safety factor in.

With cars going up to 200 mph, we DO need roll cages with skins on them,

but NA$CAR should be able to in some way, make a Charger look like a Charger, Ford, Chevy Etc.

I also like the idea that if it's a 6 cylinder in the dealers' showroom, it's a 6 on the track, FWD, etc.

When we look at how hard the crashes are these days, we need the safety factor tho,

We could/would have lost a LOT more drivers, if NA$CAR Hadn't been slowly trying to upgrade the cages.

The NHRA has been losing about a driver a year right now, and they don't race as close as we do, we would probably be doing worse.

Tina, I understand your point, but I don't expect Porsche or Ferrari to try to join NA$CAR, and Nader pretty much killed most of the other rear engine cars.

I don't know just when NA$CAR quit using factory blocks, trannys, and rear ends, but I'm sure they had disappeared by the '60's. The factory stuff couldn't hold up to what the drivers subjected them to.

Remember all the 9" Ford rear ends, in GM's?

and I'm not a Ford guy

I want a Poncho Goat, based on the '69 body, and either a "new 400 Ram Air", or the 2008 Vette 427 Z06

    Tina,

Actually I agree with you, I don't want any war either, and was NOT giving you a bad time at all. I'm just here to have a little fun, and NOT at your expense.

I was only pointing out that there really aren't many rear engine cars out there anymore.

It's hard to see someone's intent on the 'net sometimes, so I understand...

FWI, I did NOT give you a thumbs down.

  10. Yes and no. Now and then have good and bad points.

  11. Yes, in many different ways I'd like to see them go back to 'old school'.  Sadly it's all about politics and the almighty $$$.

What I would love to see most are some 'throwback races'.  Usually at least once a season, a football team will wear uniforms from back in the day...same for baseball.  I would love to see some throw back races where they bring some of the old cars back.  Last week there was a show on after 'This Week in NASCAR' called "101 Cars You Must Drive".  In it they showed some Super Birds, and some NASCAR footage of races back in the day with that Winged Beauty haulin' it around the track (one of the tracks shown was Riverside *sigh*).  Anyway, I think it would be so cool if they were to fabricate some bodies to fit on the new COT frame, so they could use as many of the safety features as possible, and run some races with those:  SuperBirds, Torinos, Cyclones, etc. etc.

    I can dream, right?

  12. Yes I do big time, this would be the Firecracker 400 tonight instead of Coke Zero 400.. A lot of these young guys out there now would fit in great back in the day, and we'd probably still the Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend.. The drivers could really show some personality, and it would be Nascar instead of Na$car.. Its just all money now and its way to to Hollywood. Heck we might even still have The Rock..

    Go Dale Jr & Hms

  13. What if someone that drove a car with an engine in the rear hit a wall and the engine came through the rear seat and killed the driver? Would you want to clean up the mess?

Not trying to start a war of opinions with my answer here. The point I wanted to make is there are so many "differences" in stock cars (bodies, engines, designs) that they have to draw a line somewhere and say "Okay, these are the guidelines".

That's just my take on it. Now days stock cars from factories can have all types of differences and add-ons. There's just too many differences between manufactures to have a fair race.

    -------------------

I didn't take it that way Hawk so don't let that bother ya...!!! I knew where you were coming from....

  14. Yes, I do.

Now it is too much about $$$$ plain and simple.  The only factor I like about today's series is the safety factor and that is about it.

  15. no because, for Me, old school was, the 60's and, 70's when only 4 to 6 drivers, had a realistic shot at winning week in and, week out.

  16. And watch a guy win a race by 9 laps? No way!

As that great immortal Billy Joel once sang: "The good old day weren't always good, and tomorrow's not as bad as it seems."

I'm glad we don't have drivers dying right and left anymore either.

Thanks to Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Michael Waltrip and other like them...this sport is not short on personality.

I'm glad they don't race "stock" cars. Watching a bunch of hybrids race would be boring.

  17. Yeah, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin, and a few other guys would fit right in back then. Back then it was exciting racing, nowadays it's "oh no he bumped somebody, he should be fined."

I wish NASCAR would let the drivers be themselves instead of trying to make everybody be politically correct in order to draw a newer fan base of people that think every driver should be a puppet. But, I guess they do whatever helps keep the ratings up, even though the racing seemed a lot better in the 90s and before, where everyone went for the win instead of racing for "points." I think drivers should get aggressive and have an incentive to win every race their in instead of cruising around trying get a decent finish and stay out of the way. That is the biggest difference to me from the races back then compared to now.

  18. I like it just the way it is. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
