  1. I expect food, only because chains like Starbucks or Seattles Best Coffee have food on display.  I might order a rice crispy treat from starbucks or cup of fruit but the reason for a coffee shop is just that, coffee!  Most people are on the run and don't think about food.

Carribu coffe has awesome treats that come with each specialty drink, I ordered a "campfire smore mocha" or something like that and the drink was garnished with marshmallows and graham crackers!  That was almost 2 years ago and several thousand coffees ago and I still remember that special treat!

  2. craig, if you're thinking of starting your own coffee shop, stick with pastries and coffee at first. let your customers get to know your coffee and be a specialty place. over time, introduce food to the menu if you feel like it would increase revenue.

  3. I kind of do expect some sort of pastry, though, I never order them. Thats odd now that I think of it.

  4. I never go to coffee shops for food.

But most if not all have some kind of sandwich or salad.  I don't think I have ever been to a coffee shop that did not sell food too.
