Do you feel mankind was meant to wear clothes?

I often wonder about this question.

The only reasonable answer is that the cold of northern climates mandates clothing.

But, african, south american tribes and southeastern island cultures seem to do pretty darn well without them.

No Bible based answers please, I already know what your going to say, so does everyone else too.

  1. Yeah I think we were meant to wear clothes. Since we are more advanced than any other species on the planet I think we would've not wanted to see each other naked after awhile! lol.

  2. Here's the thing:

You ask if something was "meant" for mankind. That pretty much makes it exclusively a religious question, because any theoretical "Maker" would have intent, which is what "meant" refers to. Science (evolution, etc) doesn't have intent, and thus science cannot "mean" for anything to happen.

  3. I for one am VERY thankful for my bra!

  4. logially speaking, the invention of clothes in northern climates is pretty much guarenteed by the evolution of our intellect as humans. Survival of the fittest, if one cannot survive with means provided, make new means or die. If they did not make clothing, they all would have died from the harsh winters. As for African cultures, clothing to some of them is just unneccicary. SInce they haven't had the need to invent clothing their bodies have developed a bit differently to accomidate for the landscape, thicker skin, thicker body hair, it helps protect their bodies.

Also, alot of northern cultures tend to sexualize the naked human body, and that is not as big an issue for primitave tribes to the south, they see the body as a body, b*****s feed babies, genitals are used for continuation of the species.

  5. I think that is why we originally lost much of our hair.  That and the ability to kill at a distance both contributed.

  6. Well, yes, for the purpose of adaptations to climate.

  7. Some in tropical climates wear no clothes, except for a strap to hold their p***s close to their body... I suspect this is done to prevent injury when they are running or going through heavy brush. However most humans have developed a culture that wears some type of clothing.  We are comfortable without clothes in such a small temprature range that most conclude some type of clothing is needed.

  8. I wonder how animals, like cats and dogs, don't seem to mind the cold when they go out and it is frigid outside.   Even their feet don't freeze.   But except for those "polar bears" who will jump into a frozen lake,  most of us would be lost without clothes, shoes and other protections against the elements.

When we go to the beach during very hot weather, we wear very little, except for the sake of modesty.    Considering the moral quality of some ot the people out there, you wouldn't want to parade in your birthday suit even if it is hot out.

  9. In cold climates since we don't have fur, its a good idea. Of course, clothing covers up many a shortcoming, lol!

  10. I, for one, am very thankful that most of us do wear clothes.  They cover up a lot of unsightly bodies out there (including mine.)

  11. yes

  12. Well, Actually, It's your choice in whether you believe man kind should or not. You know, there are some parts of America, where communities walk around naked. No lie. But, If you walk around naked in areas where people are fully clothed, you might have a run in with the police. So choose were you should run in your birthday suit wisley, ok? ;D

    hope this answers you question.

  13. You  mostly  answered your own question we where clothes because of climate. But I think you are being a tad unthinking if you think they don't strictly wear clothes. All cultures have a concept of modesty, what qualifies as modest differs.

Example,  in many tribes the men  wear nearly nothing but a cod-sheath. Now we may think that is immodest,  but that is our standard. If you took it off him, the man would likely feel great shame and embarrassment, the same feeling we get when we are 'naked'. If clothing was only practical, would we have invented high heels, uniforms, and jewelry? Would we care what colour something was?

All cultures wear proper clothing, the definition of what is proper may change, but propriety is  universal.

  14. Men yes. Women NO.

  15. Well, maybe we weren't meant to wear clothes. I think we would be more comfortable (with others and with our own bodies) if we spent the day naked, but unfortunately we need clothes when it gets cold.

But if we weren't meant to wear clothes we weren't meant to leave Africa as well, because our bodies are not ready to cope with the cold without clothes.

  16. I feel humankind was meant to discover and use protection from the elements. Sun, rain, temperature. We can't spend our entire lives inside our homes. Even primitive tribes wear loincloths (male and female) to protect the "family jewels", usually not from modesty, but for protection from inadvertent hits and the elements. That's the minimum. Then if there is rain or cold or beating sun in areas with lighter skinned primitives, more would be put on. On top of that, body adornment with jewels and specially attractive clothing accessories was used to display rank and attract mates.

All people will wear a combination of what they feel they need balanced with the accepted norms of their society. That's humanity and will differ amongst tribes, geography, and climates.

  17. Yes. That's why we're the "Naked Ape." The other animals adapted to their environments. Humankind developed a new niche by adapting our immediate environment to us.

Everybody uses clothing, and not just for temperature regulation, protecting skin from sun damage, cuts and bruises and preventing more bouncing of certain body parts than is comfortable. Clothing is also used for decoration, for ritual, to denote status--and where there's an advanced enough culture to have division of labor, to identify specialists. And everyone finds belts and shoulder slings useful for carrying handy items.

People in climates where staying warm isn't important in the daytime tend to wear less clothing, but they always have some, even if they don't wear it all of the time. And even if it doesn't cover what the Brits call "the naughty bits."
