Okay, so get this irony, I want to major in English but there is a big problem, I can't write. My writing sucks big time. However, professors are always telling me and throwing flowers at me because I'm a very good reader and I'm always ahead of the class and understand the topic well. But when it comes to the writing part, I do badly. The professors even ask me that how come I know what to talk about in class but not in paper, so why is this happening to me?

  1. It could be a reading problem, like dyslexia, but then it would be hard to write AND read.  So,  I guess everyone has their strengths and weaknesses!

  2. have you been tested for dislexia

  3. Writing is a skill, just like anything else.  It takes practice.  Good ways to practice writing are to keep a journal and read.  Read everything you can, and challenge yourself with books or articles you may struggle to understand.  You'll build up a good vocabulary and get ideas about effective or clever ways to phrase your ideas.

Also, when you write, try to develop your own personal style- a way of writing that you feel is effective, but you are comfortable writing in, and is also unique to you.  It may be boring, but outilining your points and making a plan before putting pen to paper is a great idea.  If you plan what you want to say beforehand, you can focus on the finer points and really perfect your work as you write.

Having the ideas is the most important thing, I think.  If you can grasp the concepts, like you say, in time there's no reason you can't be a GREAT writer.

  4. Well, I've heard that speaking is wayyyy different than writing. In writing you need to actually focus your topic well, organization is important, and you need to back up your position in writing a bit more than when saying the answer. Try to take one step at a time, make a list and go from there.

  5. Before begin writing a paper, make a plan about what you will write about. When you are very focused on the topic, begin writing your paper. See what happens.

  6. From what you wrote here, I think you are probably a creative and expressive writer, but need to work on your syntax and style.  Take some good grammar classes.  I was an English major and have taught high school English.  If you ever teach, your weakness in this area will help you reach students who struggle with writing also.  If you want to major in English, you should!

  7. Ask your professors what you're lacking on and go from there, it's not ironic I mean if you like English go for it don't quit, a lot of people are good at what they do but there is always the one thing they struggle with, have faith and go on
