I think its but natural for players who are no longer in their prime to lose every so often....maybe its time for them to hang up and play golf instead...were not seeing good matches lately from Federer and Justine Henin...

  1. It is strange that both the top man and woman are struggling at the same time.

This is a potentially record making and record breaking year for both players so they are bound to be feeling some pressure.

I think not having a heavy favorite at these major events definitely makes both tours more interesting.

  2. While it may not be good for Federer, it is definitely "good" for tennis!  So many contenders cannot be a bad thing!

But, I seem to recall that Federer implied in the past that this could happen!  It's not easy to remain the top player 100% of the time.

But hanging it up b/c he's lost a few matches....and he's still No. 1?  Even Sampras lost some matches! ...and Agassi!

What's your definition of "prime"?.....22 yrs old?

    GET REAL!

And where do you get off INSULTING the sport of golf?  Ya, maybe Roger should "hang up" his tennis racquet (since he is now a has-been...by YOUR standards...) and go and KICK Tiger's @ss on the golf course...cuz golf is a wussy game.....RIGHT?

Dude, you don't even know what you're talking about!

As far as Justine, well...she doesn't sustain a "power" tennis game to match the WTA's bigger hitters.  She wins more on stamina & will, than on over-powering her opponents.  I feel similarly about Mauresmo.

I hope the Russians & Serbs can maintain their grip as the top female players in the world.  They make for some great matches!  All that, without playing "moonball" tennis!

  3. No actually, Henin has being going bad same with FedEX.

I'm not surprised since both have started this year very poorly.

It has been a disappointment fir Federer and Henin, but then again also in Rome they did terrible, Justine actually dropped out!

Now with the French Open coming up, I don't know what to expect, it really is going to be an all out say. I don't think FedEX will win French Open and same goes with Henin, I even think they both will loose #1 Rankings.

Possibly Sharapova or Ana #1 for Womans.

    And Nadal for mens.

    Phil.

  4. Federer and Henin are losing more often lately and that can be attributed to a lot of things-Fed from his Mono, Henin from her time off. Any time a player takes some time off, they are liable to be a little rusty for match play. Also, the time between the Aussie Open and the French is the greatest distance between any of the four majors during the season. So I think a lot of players work on shots and things during this time and dont worry as much about losing matches. I still think Henin is the one to beat at the french, and even though Rafael lost earlier this week on the red clay, he is still the one to beat at Roland Garros.

  5. This is a really thought provoking question. Let me put my thinking cap on.

It's only strange because of hte reputation these guys have built for themselves. Federer has been so dominant over the past few years, of course it's a surprise when he loses 6 times. But top players losing 6 matches at this point of the year is not unusual. That has happened to all the greats. It's a shock when Nadal loses 1 match on clay. Yet Borg lost many more. His best clay court run is not anywhere near 81-0 or 100-2.
