  1. of course, but most of those people think we're retarded. i was surfing one day and a kid i knew who is a crazy fast and powerful pool swimmer almost drown. plus my friend saw a guy at the pipe get crushed and killed by a wave

so ya... most people do not realize the power of the ocean

  2. The general public definitely has no idea...  I can definitely use one huge example of why most people don't understand the ocean in two words=

    Rip Current.

I see so many swimmers in the summer, and just so many kooks not understand what a rip-current is, and what causes it, so they panic when they're in one.  Then the lifeguards have to rescue them.  Those are the times when I wish people would just learn and stop being so ignorant.

But everyone starts somewhere right? I remember wiping out on my first wave like it was yesterday... and it was only a knee high wave.  Felt like I was falling forever!

  3. Yeah, I've found a lot of people are ignorant of the ocean all together and do not have the respect for it that it deserves. These people are mainly just tourists. That said I also know a lot of people that have full respect for the ocean. People that live near the ocean.

On surfing, no I don't think people are ignorant, they just have different values to us (like cars or football etc) and don't really give it the attention that we do. It's only when those people decide to head out in the water without the proper knowledge and nearly kill themselves and probably someone else at the same time that they will realise their ignorance of the ocean.

You can't drive a car without the proper knowledge or play football without knowing the rules, so why do people a swim in the ocean without knowing the dangers they could be faced with?

Don't get me wrong, I believe the ocean is big enough and is there for anybody and everybody to use, but people should use some common sense and have at least some surf/ocean awareness before venturing in.

    Respect The Beach

  4. You know that over 80 percent of the people in the world will never get Barreled????

    sucks to be them!!!!

    Aloha's from the Big Aina!

  5. It looks like fun.  But you're right, I can't imagine what it would be like to get up close and personal with ocean waves!  And I live on the coast.  Maine is not that surfing oriented, though.  (It also seems like surfers have to pass a drop dead gorgeous test, too!)

  6. Well look how Hollywood who makes surfing movies that portrays it as very s**y.  Therefore, a lot of people just run out and get a surfboard without realizing that they have to work at it to actually surf like the masters.  You may be one of those surfers that refuses to care if these tourists who can’t surf actually catch a wave or not, just remember, the more inexperienced tourists s***w up and have to get rescued, then the stricter the state is when closing down beaches because of big surf conditions, which just makes it tougher on the rest of us.

  7. the ocean is natures way of clearing out the unworthy and the plain unlucky.......

  8. i think to be able to do it right you have to be at home in the ocean, with its currents, rips, undertows and sometimes big waves. I don't just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. I have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued.

That is what worries me when I read some of these questions. Lots of folks just don't know what they are getting into. The more times inexperienced people s***w up, and have to get rescued, the stricter anti surfing ordinances get past, and it makes it tough on the rest of us.

The sea takes a nasty toll on those who do not respect her.

I started surfing at 14, but I had been swimming in the ocean and back bays since I was little tike. I learned to surf, and sail pretty much on my own, because that's just the way things were in the '60s.. Today, people are learning to surf from toddlers (my 8 year old graddaughter for example) to 40 somethings. I love the growing popularity of surfing, as long as they learn the 'right way' to surf, that is to respect and love the ocean and use proper surf etiquette.

  10. I don't know if it's just about people being ignorant of surfing.  u gotta look at how popular media like a lot of surfing movies portrays it-to the general public surfing looks s**y and fluid-albeit risky.  So, a lot of people just run out and get a surfboard and never realize how much work it is to actually master the art.
