I use to fly three times a year to visit with by immediate family In North Dakota from my home on the east coast. I use to cost me $250 RT. Now it is $500 and they say that in 2009 it will be $750.00. Because driving is out of the question, I will have to stop going.

How expensive would flying have to get before you would stop using airlines to travel?

  1. I still go becauseI can fly Southwest to my family. Southwest was smart a few years ago and "locked" in a fuel contract. They still raised their fares a bit due to the "trickle down" effect such as parts, ground crew, ....everything is higher.

Southwest still gives out free snacks, still give free non-alcoholic drinks, NO BAGGAGE FEES... this will be in effect for a couple more years until their fuel contract expires.....then with their huge profits from being so busy NOW...they will probably be able to go another year (2011) until they too are forced to raise their fares and charge for snacks..

  2. They are going up because the gas price is going up. You are just going to have to get a better job or have some of your family fork some money over to you so you can visit them.

  3. that's what happens when gas price goes up. you think its hard to see the price of filling your car people?  You should see the difference in filling a plane from last year to this year. lol

I don't think any price would stop me from going, but I think i would definately not go as often.  If i saw a jump from $250 to $750 I would definately start going once a year instead of 3 times.  I mean it's about the same price as going 3 times now.  However, I would probably stay longer on that one visit to make up for some of the time lost.\

p.s. It's not likely going to go up THAT much by next year, but I'm guessing you'll be paying about $600 - $650 by next summer if the current trends continue.

  4. It's hard to a number on it, because it would also partially depend on my current financial situation.

Visiting family is a nessecity for most people, not a luxury. So it would take a large fair hike. My wifes family is from Indiana, and we used to pay 150-200 for tickets from NYC. Now its more 300-350 on average. So far thats not a big deal, but if it started to get closer to 500 I think we could cut back on the trips. But we would always go at least once or twice a year, no matter how pricey. Now we go about 4-5 times ussualy.
