Question:

Do you get annoyed...?

Do you get annoyed when people tell you that poetry doesn't have to rhyme? Do they really think that rhymed poems are on accident and that we think rhyme is the only poetic device available to us? Personally, I write rhymed, non-rhymed, structured, and free form. My poems rhyme when I want them to rhyme so it is my opinion that it is completely unnecessary for someone to point out that poems don't need to rhyme. What's your take?

  1. Basically, the rule is: if you post a rhymed poem, 50% of answerers will tell you that poetry does not have to rhyme; if you post a non-rhymed poem, 50% of answerers will tell you that poetry has to rhyme.

    It is mathematical.

    :)

  2. Yes I do. I'm terrible at rhyming and if you ever see one of my poems with rhyme it is purely by accident or else by challenge...If it's the latter you can rest assured I'm short a few handfuls of hair!

Freedom of speech and pen, I say!!

    *EDIT: I'm with Oxford, it's 5 o'clock!! WOO-HOO!

  3. i like all kind of poetry, i wish i could be a better writer or a poet, people are allowed to have their opinion, but if they don't enjoy good poetry, then maybe they are not worth it....keep on writing.

  4. Poems & prose don't have to rhyme , well not at least all the time. If they did they could become  boring, read a few lines and you'd soon be snoring. As time rolls on my thoughts are clear , to h**l with poetry I'm going for a beer.

  5. I have adopted the credo, "Anything Goes."

Like music, my mistakes are not 'wrong' notes. They are notes I did not intend to play..."there-their" "vein-vane"...things like that.

  6. Annabella has the theory.

  7. I agree with you =)

Some people are just smart asses who think they know everything; when in fact they probably don't even write or know much of anything about poetry.

  8. You must understand,Poppet, That a lot of People Do Think Of Poetry as "Rhyme". Whereas We Who actually Write and Mean

Something by It, Know The Difference!

  9. It's all in the eye or ear of the beholder.  If they do not like it, they do not have to read it.  Simple enough.  Let them do their own.

There is no such thing as good taste or poor taste, there is only your taste and my taste.  I'll bend over, and they can kiss my taste

  10. i think everyone should get to say what they want no matter how dumb it may seem.but the ones that do say that have no idea thats what bugs me. IM like you  people are like well it doesnt have to ryhme no duhh. i usally dont ryhme in my poems but i still hate when they act like they know more than you

  11. Bout the same.

  12. i think for someone like you i totally agree, However, new poets sometimes force a rhyme and spoil a good poem. perhaps because they were taught poems had to rhyme.

It still makes me smile when "newbies" tell TD that his poetry shows promise, i guess the bottom line is know who your talking  to first before you open your mouth.

  13. The people who say these things know little or nothing about poetry. I don't get annoyed; I consider the source. (You're a ? in my email)!!

  14. I hear both.  Poetry doesn't have to rhyme, when I rhyme.  And when I don't rhyme, the comment is to put some rhyme in my poem.  I just pass over their remark.  Their knowledge is lacking.

  15. No that does not annoy me, unimportant. As been said

uninformed. What more then annoys me, is people with

intent, that ramble on to tear not only the poem apart, but the

person as well, That is sick to say the least.

  16. Most of the time

    I like a rhyme

But it ain't that all significant.

    And every now and again

I struggle and rack my brain

But don't come up with anything  magnificent

And that's okay cause I've got meter, and I've got rhythm

    Alliteration, adumbration, imagination, syncopation

Big words, tall words, very very short words

I can do everything I want to with 'em.
