  1. It depends, if your car requires premium fuel and you put in regular then you will get worse mileage and worse performance.


  2. Higher octane fuel is formulated to burn slower than lesser octane fuel and has less energy per gallon.

    Octane has nothing to do with energy potential of the fuel.

    Octane is the rate that gasoline can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites.

    High octane fuel is for high compression engines or engines with superchargers or turbochargers.

    This is to prevent detonation.  Detonation is a condition where the fuel air mixture ignites during compression before the spark plug fires.  Detonation can cause severe internal engine damage.
