I just moved to college and Ive been eating less than usual mainly because i eat with my roomate and she doesnt eat that often.

Dont worry its still at a healthy quantity!

Anyway. I know this is funny but I have been SOOO gassy lately. Not just farts but painful rubbling and bubbling in my stomach.. which results in a f**t or burp. Its embarassing. If im not alone I have to hold it in which makes it worse!

Does that have any connection?

  1. you're describing heart burn. you should take tums or pepto bismol. that should do the trick.

  2. It's quite the opposite for me. When I'm active and losing weight, I'm a lot less gassy.

It may have to do with your portion size, your stress level, or what you're eating. I am gassier if I eat more in a sitting than if I snack on smaller things and eat small meals through the day. You're probably eating different things away from home, too. Keep track of what you're eating and think about what you ate at home. What's different?

Stress level factors in, but is the hardest thing to change. You can't help that you're beginning a new part of your life! Try adjusting your diet, increasing your activity level, and buying some healthy snacks to munch on through the day (an upperclassman will be happy to run you to a local grocery store if you don't have a car. My daily snacks are apples, organic cliff bars, nuts, and carrot sticks but choose your favorites!).

Getting enough sleep will also help with your stress level.  My digestive system gets pretty gross when I'm sleep-deprived.

This is a long shot, but if your diet has changed quite a bit, you may have found something in the school food you're allergic to. I quit eating wheat and potatoes when I realized I might be allergic to them. I didn't lose a single pound, but my waist shrunk down so much that my suit pants literally fall off. I'm going to have to get them tailored! Those foods made me bloat up like a puffer fish!

Have you introduced anything to your diet or beverage intake that has a lot of artificial sweeteners in it? This can be a big problem for some people. I'm now a sugar-only girl! That diet soda can wreak havoc on some intestines.

If you've recently been introduced to beer or if you've increased your beer intake, that's a major culprit. Drink moderately, and stick to something less yeasty. Any non-malt beverage is almost gauranteed to be kinder to your system.

While we're on the subject of yeast, acidophilus and other pro-biotics can help with gas if you don't have enough of the helpful little digestive buggers in your system.  Stress, antibiotics, diet, and lifestyle changes in particular can kill them off, so pick up a bottle and start taking them.

    Right! So! Summary:

    1. Compare what you're eating now to what you used to eat at home to look for gas culprits. Are you eating richer food? More beans? More dairy, especially cheese? Broccoli? More processed foods? These are all big suspects.

    2. Try to shrink your portion sizes by acquiring healthy snacks and eating more often to reduce bloating from big meals

    3. Increase your activity level. Walk, hit the gym, join a yoga class, whatever floats your boat!

    4. Stick to real sugar whenever possible. If diet soda is your favorite thing in the whole wide world, try to figure out which artificial sweetener you have the least amount of problems with (ie, splenda, nutrisweet, etc) and switch to the appropriate diet soda. Diet soda is linked to weight gain and soda in general is linked to health problems anyway, so skip it unless you can't live without it! Also, sodas make you gassier. Heck, they have gas dissolved into them!

    5. Watch your booze, especially beer. Beer is a gassy, gassy beverage. Switch to something less yeasty and uncarbonated.

    6.  Help your stress level out by getting enough sleep, exercise, and nutrients.  Long walks are especially good for degassing.  :-P  A vitamin B complex will help, but you might want to skip the fish oil if you're already burping quite a bit.

    7.   Acidophilus and other probiotics aid digestion!

    8. If all else fails, be on the lookout for a potential food allergy.

    Good luck with your degassing!

  3. It might just be down to you changing your diet. Are you eating different things?

Are you nervous about college? Occasionally, gas can be a sign of nerves.
