  1. For this problem you simply need to plug in the numbers given you (8.25 inches for the width and 10.5 inches for length) into x the width and y the length.

    5(2x+2y)

    5(2(8.25 in.)+2(10.5 in.))

    5(16.5 in. + 21 in.)

    5(37.5 in.)

    137.5 in.

Each line is equal to the next.  187.5 inches is the perimeter of all 5 frames added together.  187.5 inches should be your final answer.

  2. Look at it another way: 5(2x+2y) is the same as saying that I've got two 8.25" widths (2x) and two 10.5" lengths (2y) per frame and I need 5 frames. See ???  So for each frame, you need 8.25 X 2 = 16.5" plus 10.5 X 2 = 21" for a total of 37.5 inches per frame. Multiply that times the number of frames you need (in this case 5), and you get your answer. It will come to you......................

  3. Each frame will have 2 sides at 8.25 inches and 2 sides at 10.5 inches.

    = (2 x 8.25) + (2 x 10.5) = 16.5 + 21 = 37.5 inches.

    5 frames x 37.5 inches per frame = 187.5 inches / 12 = 15ft and 7½ inches. (Say 16ft to give a margin for error).
