1. They are Russians so this is cultural. No malice there.

2. They have a very close relationship. Her father was also an Olympic gymnast in his days so he knows what she is going through.

3. They have been doing this since she was little, sort of affectionate gestures that they carried on to this day.

It's only to those malicious eyes and minds that see any malice in this.

not really because he's russian (he was actually on the soviet gymnastics team) and i've seen the russian's do that before during meets! also, butt slapping seems to be pretty common in all sports (i've seen it in football, baseball, shoot even volleyball!) and it's her dad! i mean come on, can't anything be harmless anymore or does everyone have to jump to conclusions?

A lot of gymnasts say thier trainer is like a second dad so the fact that Nastia's dad is her trainer, makes their relationship all the more special because they spend a lot of time together at home, in the gym, at competitions, and what-not.

They have a healthy father/daughter relationship that used to be quite common but now it is seen as something weird and disgusting - which is wrong for you to judge that there is something more.

Yes..but I'm not Russian so I wouldn't know.  I think Europeans are more liberal in general.  I see spanish guys kiss each other all the time or show affection that I would normally show with a girlfriend.  So I don't know..any Europeans want to answer this?

It's weird to us, but Russian families are very affectionate.

The other Russian gymnasts kiss each other on the lips, and they were girls.

It doesn't mean that they like each other sexually.
