I cant stand it.And their are proper words for the young male and female horse.

Filly:female horse under 4 yrs of age

Colt:male horse under 4 yrs of age

For example: You are looking for a young horse for sale to buy and break and a ad in your local paper says something like"2 yr old black QH colt for sale" then you call about it assuming its a colt just to find out its a filly.

I am not looking for a horse to break.I got plenty right now.I was just using that for a example.

my question is...do yall feel the same way?

  1. Nope...

Because the people around here that do refer to all young ones as colts, usually know wayyyyy more in training than those that get all bothered by them using the term.

  2. Absolutely, it just doesn't sound right to call a female baby horse a colt.

  3. yes! i totally agree. it just makes people look very inexperienced about horses =]

  4. i think i know what u mean?! yeah that's annoying when that happens!it annoys me when they dont put a price on adverts!or when they put 'ono' like my horse that ive recently brought was advertised for £1650 ono so we put an offer of £1450 but they said they wouldnt take less than £1600! how stupid! what was the point in even putting 'ono' they should of put 'ovno' or nothing at all! i dunno some people! lol

  5. I don't, but when I was growing up, TV was dominated by westerns.  Young horses were usually referred to as colts.  I just got used to it, and to this day it doesn't surprise me when people still do it.

  6. Well, that is what old-fashioned farmers call them.  It does not mean that they are inexpierenced, it just means that they haven't caught up with the present, lol.

    Horse colt-male

    Filly colt- female.

That is how it USED to be.

Personally, I agree with you. It is kind of annoying.

  7. I saw an ad for a 1 year old mare... that kind of made me laugh too.

At least they make a vague effort and don't just call it a boy horse and a girl horse... I hear a lot of people refer to various animals as just being boys and girls rather than using any sort of proper term like colt/filly, cow/bull, doe/buck, and whatnot.

  8. yes i do.One time i found a horse for sale and it said it was a colt and it was a filly.it made me sooo mad because i planned on buying that "colt" for weeks just to find out it was a filly

  9. yesss !

ugh . its so annoying .

its like, if your an experienced horse person, you should know that a young horse is a foal, not a colt !! a colt is a male horse under four!!!!

  10. I do feel the same way, but I was always taught that a filly/colt was a horse under the age of three.

Where my dad was brought up, he would visist his grandmans farm evveery summer and they called youg fillies:colts and young colts: horse colts

  11. Yes!

I hate it when people call roan horses brown too. ^.^

    Grr!

  12. I'm totally with you!

I went to buy a mare a while back just to find out it totally had balls (they didn't have any proper pics online) AND it had sired foals, unbeknownst to the owners. They seriously thought their other stud was somehow jumping the fence between pastures and getting in with the mares at night, to end up back in its pasture by morning. The stallions weren't even the same breed! They never wondered how they were getting Arabian dished faces in pure QH mares from a pure QH stud.

Man, they're never going to hear the end of that.

  13. Your rants are getting raves.

I hate it as much as I hate raves in the form of questions.

(aka i dont care, not worth the time to get mad, just explain it and MOVE ON)

  14. BRAVO MULE!!!!!!!

I agree!  You can tell a person who tries to hard to use "so called" proper terms for everything are the people who know the least about ANYTHING!!!  Not just horses.  They try to sound educated when what they sound is ridiculous!

What bugs me is people who refer to horses as "my pony".  There, that tells you that that person doesn't know the difference between a horse & a pony........NOT EVERYTHING IS A PONY!!!

  15. yes i hate it. just call the horse by its proper name. once i was going to look at this colt but i found out the it was a filly and then i didn't want it.

  16. to be honest, ive never heard of someone mixing up like that. but i DO hate it when my friends call a baby horse a pony!! ITS A FOAL GEEZ!

  17. around here we don't buy a horse that we don't inspect in person but we also use terms like filly colt, stud colt, cut colt and to ranchers we always look for bits and pieces (or lack thereof) when we do our inspection.i grew up using that term as well as my father and grandfather and we always ask on the phone first as to the s*x before we leave the ranch.

we also refer to a full grown horse as a pony if you think you wouldnt want to throw a rope off of it.
