I recently just purchased an LCD HDTV. Should I upgrade my current Direct tv plus dvr receiver for the HD one? How much is roughly your monthly bill for this service?

  1. HD pictures are amazing compared to regular TV, so an upgrade is a must if you want to use your TV for what it's meant to be used for.

I don't have DirecTV, I have Dish Network.  The receiver may be more expensive (and definitely will be if you include the DVR; you have to pay a monthly rental fee for that, which is probably around $5/month).  Assuming DirecTV works the same as Dish, they'll have to come out and replace your satellite.  They need different transmitters to get the HD broadcasts as opposed to regular digital broadcasts.  Whether they charge you more for this installation, I don't know.  I'd call DirecTV and find out the details.

Two things are certain: it will cost more money monthly (my guess would be around $15/month minimum, based on Dish's prices) and the picture will be phenomenally better (at least on the HD channels).

  2. Yes, you should get the HD DVR. You only need one HD DVR/receiver if you only want to watch HD on one TV.  You may have to upgrade to the 5 LNB dish if you don't already have it (to get HD).  You will have to pay $199 to get the HD DVR, AND pay for the monthly DVR service AND pay $10 per month for HD service.  But, since you already are paying for the DVR service, that part shouldn't change.  If you send your old DVR back and get the correct dish, then your bill should only go up $10 a month.  Do not be fooled if you "buy" the DirecTV HD DVR from a store such as Best Buy.  It does not belong to you.  You are still leasing it from DirecTV.

  3. I am still on my first 3 months of service so I have all the movie channels free - so omitting them, my bill comes to $70.  I am supposed to be getting $20 off for a year thanks to some other promotion but that hasn't kicked in yet.  If that is higher than what you are paying... stick with what you've got... the picture can't really get that much better can it??
