Especially with a chest freezer things work their way to the bottom.I try to keep it organized but it doesn't stay that way long.Do you have a system for keeping inventory on what you have in the freezer? I just tried to straighten it out again and I found several bags of the same thing. Some have be opened, some whole bags.I need to make sure that I use the opened bags first and then use the whole bags before buying more.I found meats that have been in the freezer way too long and I had to toss them out.How to you keep track of what you have in the freezer?Suggestions please!!! Thanks

  1. chest in the overhead of the refrigerator

And an under the counter upright rather tiny..

sure holds a lot of frozen dinners I get on sale..

  2. My dad had a chest, and he would use the cardboard flats used in bulk groceries (check the soda aisle in the grocery store--they often sell the store brand colas in flats). Then he would stack the flats in layers. The oldest items were always on top so they would be used first. It took a little work rotating them, but it was very organized.

  3. I have an upright freezer in the garage, and a refrigerator/freezer inside.  I keep ice cream & Cool Whip on the top shelf;  vegetables on the door; and try to keep chicken on 1 shelf, and beef on the other.  Once I open a package of veggies, I put it into a zip-loc freezer bag, and move it to the inside freezer ....

  4. we have them both actually

Make al ist of all that is inside, tape it on the chest freezer witha a pen. when you remove something, cross it off the list

  5. I have an upright and I find it easier than a chest one

you can put a list on the top with what is in there and when it was put in, that way you can add to what is in there in the right place

  6. I have an up right which is much easier than a chest type freezer.  We had a chest freezer and after deer season, I insisted on an upright.  I still end up with extra stuff I didn't know was in there, but at least I have the top shelf is mostly meat (chicken, burger, pork, etc.).  Next shelf is more frozen veggies, garlic toast, etc.  Third shelf is leftovers and odds and ends.  The floor of it is homefrozen berries and if I have a turkey or big ham.  The door holds odds and ends of leftover broth, home frozen tomatoes, etc.  I know you just can do that with a chest type.  I would suggest getting baskets that you can put like food in and stack the baskets.  Otherwise, they just get jumbled and things end up buried!

  7. try putting thing in stacks or piles.  always take from the top.  and when you buy new put them on the bottom.

also.... label everything with a date and "item" if you can.

if you freezer is packed.... try not going food shopping for awhile.  this way you will be forced to use what is in the freezer.. and not forget about it!!

also.... if something is on sale.. but you have it already... you don't have to buy it!!!!  it's hard to get out of that habit..but if you don't have the room and you will just end up throwing it out.... you actually wasted your $.. instead of saving it on the sale.

    good luck!

    all the best :)
